India to Host Inaugural International Big Cat Summit in 2026

In a significant move for wildlife conservation, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, unveiled the official website and logo for the inaugural International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) Summit scheduled for June 1, 2026, in New Delhi. The launch event also featured a promotional film highlighting the Summit’s goals and themes. Attendees included Heads of Mission from countries that are home to big cats, along with officials from various government ministries.

A Global Commitment to Conservation

The IBCA, headquartered in India, aims to protect seven iconic big cat species: the Lion, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma. During the announcement, Minister Yadav described the Summit as a pivotal moment that will assemble global leaders and stakeholders to address the future of big cat conservation under the motto, ‘Save Big Cats, Save Humanity, Save Ecosystem’.

Collaboration for Survival

The Minister highlighted India’s rich history in big cat conservation, showcasing its success in initiatives like Project Tiger. Through collaborative efforts and scientific management, India has shown that environmental preservation can coexist with developmental goals. This experience inspired the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, to establish the IBCA in 2023, aiming to create a platform for joint action against conservation challenges faced by big cat range countries.

A Groundbreaking Summit on the Horizon

Shri Yadav underscored the Summit’s potential to redefine global conservation diplomacy. It is set to attract over 400 participants, including conservationists, policymakers, scientists, and representatives from international financial institutions and corporations. During the Summit, attendees will work towards adopting the ‘Delhi Declaration’, the first global agreement dedicated to big cat conservation. This declaration will highlight shared priorities and foster transboundary cooperation essential for protecting these majestic animals and their habitats.

Connecting Cultures Through Wildlife

The Summit will also feature technical sessions on June 1 and 2, 2026, where experts and representatives from 95 big cat range countries will collaborate and share insights. An exhibition showcasing tribal art, films, and immersive experiences related to big cat conservation will complement the Summit’s core agenda.

A New Digital Era for Conservation

Minister Yadav remarked on the significance of the newly launched IBCA Summit website, which will serve as a central hub for information, engagement, and community outreach on global big cat conservation efforts. The website will host the official film and provide a platform for sharing the Summit’s vision.

Unity in Diversity

The distinctive IBCA Summit logo, reflecting the spirit of interconnected ecosystems, features all seven big cat species at its center, encircled by a lotus-inspired design that symbolizes the five elements of nature. Ending his address, Minister Yadav called for vigorous participation and engagement from nations worldwide, extending an invitation to big cat range countries not yet a part of the IBCA to join this crucial initiative. The success of the Summit will rely on the collective leadership and commitment of these nations.
