India to Host Commonwealth Games in 2030: Athletes Celebrate
In a significant boost to India’s sports landscape, renowned athletes Rupinder Pal Singh and Rohit Tokas celebrated the country’s successful bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, marking a 20-year hiatus since the last edition. Rupinder, a member of the Indian hockey team that earned an Olympic bronze in Tokyo 2020, emphasized the collective efforts of the Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS), the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), and National Sports Federations (NSFs) in securing the prestigious event.
“The Commonwealth Games returning to India after two decades is monumental for all Indian sportspersons,” Rupinder stated during an event at the Indira Gandhi Stadium. He recalled that he had not yet made his international debut during India’s last hosting in 2010 and expressed excitement for athletes competing on home soil. “The last time we hosted the games, we celebrated 100 medals, and I am confident we can achieve similar success in 2030,” he added.
With the 2030 games, sports like hockey and shooting, which were excluded from the Birmingham edition, are anticipated to return. Rupinder views this as an additional motivational factor for athletes. “This news is uplifting for all Indian sports enthusiasts,” he remarked.
In a collaborative effort, the Fit India movement hosted the 62nd edition of cycling events, drawing participants across over 1,000 locations nationwide. Celebrating 75 years of service by the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), the event also featured prominent personalities, including Sh. Ashok Kumar Singh (IAS), DG of ESIC, and Sh. Mayank Srivastava (IPS), DDG of Khelo India.
“I was thrilled to see more than 500 people cycling with me at the IG Stadium today. The Fit India movement aims to encourage citizens to dedicate at least 30 minutes to an hour for personal fitness, a necessity in combating lifestyle-related diseases,” Rupinder commented. He also extended congratulations to ESIC for its extensive service.
Rohit Tokas, who secured a bronze medal in boxing during the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, remarked on the significance of hosting the games, believing it will enhance sports infrastructure and inspire more youth to pursue sports careers. “Competing in front of a home crowd is an unparalleled experience for any athlete, full of unforgettable moments. The impact of hosting this event echoes from the development of infrastructure witnessed in 2010,” Rohit shared.
Participating in Fit India Sundays on Cycle, Rohit appreciated the vibrant community atmosphere and urged everyone to adopt fitness into their daily routine. “It has been a wonderful experience to engage with so many people; everyone should strive to incorporate fitness into their lives, whether through yoga, Zumba, or other forms of exercise at home,” he advised.
The Fit India Sundays on Cycle initiative, launched in December 2024 by Dr. Mandaviya, promotes fitness, environmental awareness, and sustainable mobility. The movement has gained traction, witnessing the involvement of over 25 lakh citizens across more than 200,000 locations, highlighting its transformation into a nationwide phenomenon.
