India to Boost Quantum Research with New Facilities in 23 Institutions
The Indian government has taken significant steps to advance research and training in quantum technologies by approving the establishment of quantum teaching facilities at 23 academic institutions across various states. Additionally, plans for 100 more facilities are under review as part of the National Quantum Mission aimed at fostering innovation in this rapidly evolving field.
This announcement was made during a joint meeting of Secretaries from different Science Ministries and Departments, chaired by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, among other roles. The assembly reviewed ongoing scientific programs, national events on the horizon, and methods to enhance collaboration among science ministries.
Reviewing Upcoming National Events
Key figures at the meeting included the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, and heads of various scientific departments, who discussed the planning for the upcoming India International Science Festival (IISF) 2026. Pune has been suggested as the venue, with the Department of Biotechnology starting to lay groundwork for the event’s themes, program structure, and logistics.
Strengthening Innovation Ecosystem
The meeting also highlighted the recent 5th RISE Conclave, which successfully united academia, industry leaders, and startups in Chennai to bolster innovation and technology commercialization. Participants engaged in panel discussions and networking, showcasing innovations with over 140 stalls from CSIR laboratories and institutions affiliated with the Department of Science & Technology, Department of Biotechnology, and others.
Technology Day and Further Initiatives
Plans for National Technology Day, scheduled for May 11, 2026, were discussed as well. A major technology showcase is envisioned at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from May 11 to 13. The event aims to spotlight innovations from national research organizations and startups, drawing over 3,000 stakeholders and featuring upwards of 500 technologies across diverse sectors.
Inter-Ministerial Collaboration
The meeting emphasized the need to promote collaborative research efforts among science departments. By encouraging joint projects, the aim is to utilize diverse expertise to address national research priorities effectively. Updates on significant scientific missions, including preparations for the next PSLV mission and upcoming satellite launches, were also shared.
Revising Guidelines for Research Staff
In light of ongoing scientific endeavors, revisions to the manpower guidelines for project staff involved in research programs are being considered. The Department of Science and Technology is looking to align these updates with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) framework to ensure consistency across departments.
Enhancing Public Engagement
Lastly, the meeting focused on enhancing communication strategies to ensure that scientific accomplishments from national laboratories gain wider recognition and engage more effectively with industry, academia, and the general public.
