India Signs First MoU for Eco-Friendly Truck and Bus Replacement

The Government of India has taken a significant step toward reducing vehicular pollution in the Delhi–NCR region by signing its first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under a new scheme for replacing aging trucks and buses. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) entered into this partnership with Ashok Leyland and its subsidiary, Switch Mobility, making them the first Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to collaborate on this initiative.

As part of the agreement, both companies will offer an 8 percent discount on the ex-showroom price for eligible trucks and buses that meet the scheme’s criteria. Additionally, for electric vehicles, the discount will be equivalent to that available for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles within the same Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) category, ensuring that customers benefit economically from transitioning to cleaner technologies.

Incentives for Fleet Modernisation

The government has designed this scheme to encourage fleet operators owning trucks and buses that are compliant with Bharat Stage-IV (BS-IV) or earlier emission norms to upgrade to Bharat Stage-VI (BS-VI) or stricter emission-compliant vehicles, including electric options. The initiative addresses the pressing issue of vehicular pollution in one of India’s most densely populated regions.

In addition to discounts from OEMs, the Central Government will provide a 5 percent interest subvention along with fixed monthly fuel vouchers for five years. Participating State Governments will go further by offering up to 100 percent concession on motor vehicle tax for ten years and waiving registration fees for eligible beneficiaries. These comprehensive incentives aim to ease the financial burden on fleet operators, making it easier for them to adopt more environmentally friendly vehicles.

Moving Towards Cleaner Transportation

The Ministry has emphasized that the signing of this MoU represents a key milestone in operationalizing the scheme. It marks the beginning of a broader movement to modernize the public transport fleet while simultaneously tackling the pollution crisis in the region. The government has expressed optimism that more automobile OEMs will join the initiative soon, enhancing participation and promoting the adoption of cleaner transport technologies.

This initiative is expected to pave the way for a significant transformation in the vehicle landscape of Delhi–NCR, aligning with the country’s broader environmental goals.
