India Plans for Global Yoga Day 2026: A Unifying Effort

The Ministry of Ayush hosted an important meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) in New Delhi today, focusing on the planning and execution of activities for the upcoming International Day of Yoga (IDY) in 2026. The event convened senior officials from various government ministries, prominent yoga gurus, and representatives from yoga institutions to discuss strategies aimed at elevating yoga as a global movement focused on holistic health and well-being.

Commitment to Global Outreach

Chaired by Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Minister of State (I/C) for Ayush, the meeting underscored the government’s dedication to enhancing both national and global outreach for yoga. In his remarks, Jadhav acknowledged the enthusiasm generated from the recent 50-day countdown event to IDY 2026 in Hyderabad, noting how yoga has transformed from a mere practice into a widespread public movement promoting healthier lifestyles.

Yoga’s Global Influence

The Minister highlighted India’s global leadership in promoting yoga, particularly under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s guidance. Since the inception of IDY in 2015, the phenomenon has expanded to over 190 countries, inspiring millions to embrace yoga for physical wellness, mental balance, and inner tranquility.

A Unified Approach for IDY 2026

Emphasizing a comprehensive government approach, Jadhav called on all ministries to actively participate in the success of IDY 2026. He outlined critical focus areas such as maximizing engagement in the Common Yoga Protocol on June 21, integrating yoga into schools, workplaces, and healthcare systems, ensuring inclusivity in rural areas, and leveraging digital platforms for outreach. He stressed the importance of timely execution and coordination among government sectors to maximize public participation.

International Support for Yoga

Shri Sibi George, Secretary (West) of the Ministry of External Affairs, reaffirmed the MEA’s commitment to supporting international observance of IDY 2026 through its global network. George noted the success of ongoing international initiatives, including a six-month yoga practice program in Japan that signifies yoga’s acceptance as a vital health tool.

Roadmap for the Future

In her presentation, Ms. Monalisa Dash, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Ayush, shared proposed activities and strategies for IDY 2026, stressing collaborative efforts among ministries, yoga organizations, and community stakeholders. Discussions highlighted the need for increased youth participation, digital outreach, and alignment with national health initiatives to ensure wider visibility and engagement.

As the meeting concluded, the Ministry of Ayush affirmed that the actions and plans developed will guide coordinated efforts leading up to International Day of Yoga 2026. With an emphasis on inclusivity and innovation, the Ministry expressed confidence that this year’s observance will enhance India’s role as a leader in promoting yoga globally as a pathway to health and harmony.
