India Pioneers Green Economy with New Job Opportunities
Union Minister of State Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized that “Green Jobs” and “Green Entrepreneurship” are poised to be the essential pillars of the forthcoming Green Economy in India. Speaking at the National Conference on “Environmental Sustainability in the 21st Century: Science, Society and Solutions” at Jamia Millia Islamia, he highlighted how sectors such as renewable energy, electric mobility, and circular economy are set to generate substantial employment opportunities for the youth.
Dr. Singh stated that this transition promises not only to create jobs but also to drive India towards sustainable and low-carbon growth. His remarks came during a valedictory session on Earth Day, where he was joined by academic leaders including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Guest of Honour Prof. D.P. Singh, among faculty and students.
Investment in Green Initiatives
The Minister expressed confidence in India’s burgeoning green ecosystem, pointing out initiatives like the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which boasts an outlay of over ₹19,000 crore. These efforts are crucial in fostering a clean industrial transformation across the country.
Dr. Jitendra Singh noted that emerging technologies are critical for enabling decarbonization in major sectors, including steel and cement, positioning India as a leader in the global green transition. He remarked on the accelerating pace of technological change, advocating for continuous innovation to adapt to evolving solutions.
Expanding Employment Opportunities
As the demand for green jobs surges, Dr. Singh highlighted diverse fields like solar manufacturing, battery production, and biofuels as promising employment avenues. He illustrated this by mentioning grassroots innovations in electric mobility, where traditional vehicles are being transformed into electric ones, thereby making sustainability more accessible.
The Minister further brought attention to the circular economy, particularly the conversion of used cooking oil into biofuel, as a significant hub for entrepreneurship and job creation. He pointed out untapped potential in ocean energy, which complements solar and wind energy and could be harnessed to meet energy demands more sustainably.
Enhancing Energy Security
Discussing energy security, Dr. Jitendra Singh underscored India’s commitment to expanding its nuclear power capacity, outlining long-term goals that encourage private sector involvement in strategic energy domains, including space and nuclear energy. This approach aims to catalyze innovation and attract investments.
The Minister also highlighted the ₹1 lakh crore Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund catalyzing support for startups and innovators, fostering collaboration between government and private sectors.
India’s Role in Global Climate Action
Highlighting India’s significant responsibility in addressing climate change, Dr. Jitendra Singh remarked that with a population of 1.4 billion, India is well-positioned to lead the global green transition, inspired by the vision of “Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE)” promoted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He encouraged students and young researchers to seize opportunities in the realm of sustainability, asserting that innovation, adaptability, and informed choices will shape the future.
