India Marks 20th Statistics Day: Celebrating Data’s Role in Development

In a significant milestone for India, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will celebrate the 20th Statistics Day on June 29, 2026, at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. This annual observance honors the birth anniversary of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, a trailblazer in the field of statistics and economic planning. The day aims to enhance public understanding of the critical role statistics play in shaping socio-economic policies and overall national development, particularly among the youth.

Theme Focus: Leveraging Administrative Data

Every year, Statistics Day is marked by a theme reflecting national relevance, with 2026 focusing on “Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data.” This theme emphasizes the necessity of harnessing data generated from administrative processes to enhance evidence-based policymaking and governance. It highlights the importance of improving data quality, interoperability, and integration to ensure that administrative data serves as a reliable source for producing timely, accurate, and detailed statistics.

The event will be inaugurated by Dr. P.K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, who will serve as the Chief Guest and deliver the keynote address. The inaugural session will also feature remarks from Rao Inderjit Singh, the Hon’ble Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of MoSPI, along with additional addresses by Dr. Saibal Chattopadhyay, Chairperson of the National Statistical Commission, and Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of MoSPI. Additionally, the prestigious Sukhatme National Award in Statistics will be conferred to honor exemplary contributions in the field.
