India Leads the Charge in Clean Energy Innovations

India is making significant strides in the global clean energy landscape, positioning itself as a leader through a strategic blend of policy support, technological advancements, and active industry participation. During the World Hydrogen Energy Summit in New Delhi, Minister of State for Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh, highlighted the country’s commitment to advancing green hydrogen technologies and expanding nuclear energy capabilities.

At the summit, which also featured the World Petrocoal Congress, Dr. Singh detailed India’s comprehensive energy roadmap. The Minister outlined the goal of attracting nearly 100 billion USD in oil and gas investments while expanding exploration areas to one million square kilometers. Additionally, he emphasized raising the share of natural gas in the nation’s energy mix to 15 percent, alongside ongoing growth in refining capacity, securing India’s place among the world’s leading nations.

Green Hydrogen Mission and Nuclear Advancements

Dr. Jitendra Singh pointed to the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which has an allocation of ₹19,744 crore, as a catalyst for India’s efforts in developing alternative fuel ecosystems. He noted the critical role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing sectors like steel and cement, with ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing production costs through domestic innovation.

Moreover, the Minister announced the ambitious Nuclear Energy Mission, targeting an impressive 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. This initiative reflects India’s entry into a new phase of its nuclear program, enhanced by indigenous technology, aligning the country with a select group of nuclear-capable nations.

Innovative Reactor Solutions and Private Sector Engagement

Dr. Singh underscored the importance of small nuclear reactors in India’s energy future, announcing plans to develop five Small Modular Reactors by 2033, with three already in progress. Among these projects are the Bharat Small Modular Reactor, the Bharat Small Reactor based on heavy water technology, and a new hydrogen-linked reactor designed for modest capacity. These innovations promise flexible, scalable, and decentralized clean energy solutions.

Recent policy reforms have opened the nuclear sector to private participation, incorporating rationalized liability provisions that will encourage startups and MSMEs to take part in clean energy infrastructure expansion.

Green Jobs and Future Opportunities

Looking ahead, Dr. Jitendra Singh discussed emerging opportunities in green jobs linked to electric mobility, battery recycling, grid management, and renewable manufacturing. He mentioned initiatives focused on creating a circular economy, including converting used cooking oil and agricultural waste into biofuels, alongside exploring new energy sources such as ocean energy.

The Minister concluded by affirming that India’s demographic advantages, technological prowess, and forward-thinking policies will enable the nation to play a crucial role in global decarbonization efforts, ensuring sustainable growth and energy access for its population.
