India Leads Global Innovation with Bio-Bitumen from Agro-Waste
In a groundbreaking initiative, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, announced that India has become the first country in the world to produce bio-bitumen commercially. This innovative step is part of the vision for Viksit Bharat 2047, aiming to transform agricultural waste into a valuable national resource.
During his address at the CSIR’s Technology Transfer Ceremony titled “From Farm Residue to Road: Bio-Bitumen via Pyrolysis,” Shri Gadkari emphasized the significant benefits of bio-bitumen. By utilizing agricultural waste, this process not only reduces pollution from crop burning but also enhances the circular economy in India. With a blending ratio of 15%, the country stands to save nearly ₹4,500 crore in foreign exchange, thereby decreasing reliance on imported crude oil.
Shri Gadkari praised the efforts of CSIR and its dedicated scientists for achieving this milestone, recognizing their crucial role in propelling India towards sustainable development. He also extended his gratitude to Union Minister of State Shri Jitendra Singh for his ongoing support in reaching this significant breakthrough.
The introduction of bio-bitumen is expected to empower farmers, create rural livelihoods, and energize the rural economy. This innovation reflects the Modi Government’s commitment to environmentally responsible growth and self-reliance, paving the way for a cleaner and greener tomorrow.
The significance of this development extends beyond just economic benefits; it represents a proactive approach to tackling the environmental challenges posed by traditional agricultural practices. As India forges ahead with this technology, it sets a remarkable precedent for sustainable practices worldwide.
