India Launches World’s Most Powerful 2,400-kW Hydrogen Train, Emitting Only Water Vapour

India’s first hydrogen-powered train, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month, has already traveled approximately 6,000 kilometers. This train, recognized as the world’s most powerful hydrogen train, operates between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana. With a capacity of 2,600 passengers and a maximum speed of 75 km/h, it is designed to reach speeds of up to 110 km/h.

Unique Features of the Hydrogen Train

India joins a select group of countries that have developed hydrogen-powered trains. While Germany was the pioneer in commercial hydrogen train operations, China has also deployed similar trains. Other countries, including France and Italy, are in the process of launching services, while Japan, the US, UK, and South Korea are primarily at the pilot stage. Unlike most hydrogen trains globally, which typically have two or three coaches, India’s train boasts ten coaches, making it the longest hydrogen train in operation. It features a powerful 3,200 HP propulsion system.

Significance of the Hydrogen Train Project

Hydrogen trains offer a greener transport alternative, especially in remote areas where electrification is challenging. They could serve heritage routes like Kalka-Shimla, providing a sustainable mobility option. The project showcases India’s railway engineering capabilities, with design and manufacturing carried out domestically by RDSO, ICF, and Medha.

The hydrogen-powered train aligns with India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. It produces only water vapor as a byproduct, significantly reducing emissions compared to conventional trains. Indian Railways estimates that the hydrogen train has already cut down approximately 36,444 kg, or nearly 36 tonnes, of CO2 equivalent emissions. The train’s operations are supported by an indigenously developed hydrogen storage and refueling facility at Jind, and ticket prices remain comparable to ordinary DEMU services, ranging from Rs 10 to Rs 25.
