India Launches Historic Mountaineering Expeditions

On March 26, 2025, Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth inaugurated joint expeditions to Mount Kangchenjunga and Mount Everest from South Block, New Delhi. The Everest expedition, organized in partnership with the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) and the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports (JIM&WS), celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM). Meanwhile, the Kangchenjunga expedition is part of the โHar Shikhar Tirangaโ initiative led by the National Institute of Mountaineering and Adventure Sports (NIMAS).
Significance of the Expeditions
During the flag-off ceremony, Shri Sanjay Seth emphasized that these expeditions symbolize more than just reaching the peaks; they represent India’s growing prowess in adventure sports. He stated, โIndia is fast emerging as a powerhouse in the global adventure sports arena, and mountaineering institutions under the Ministry of Defence are pivotal in shaping this ecosystem.โ The Raksha Rajya Mantri expressed confidence in the teams, asserting that their successful summits would inspire a new generation of mountaineers both in India and worldwide.
Shri Seth further highlighted the role of mountaineering institutes in nurturing youth talent, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision of fostering self-reliance and resilience. He noted that these expeditions would not only test the climbers’ skills and teamwork but also serve as a beacon of inspiration for aspiring adventurers across the nation.
Expedition to Mount Everest
The Everest expedition is set to commence on April 2, 2025, with a team of seven experienced climbers from NIM, HMI, and JIM&WS. Led by Col Anshuman Bhadauria, Principal of NIM, the team will follow the traditional South Col Route in Nepal, a path taken by many legendary climbers. Their journey will involve navigating the challenging Khumbu Valley, acclimatizing at high-altitude camps, and preparing for the summit push scheduled for May 2025. This expedition aims to provide invaluable experience to instructors, enabling them to train future generations of Indian mountaineers.
Expedition to Mount Kangchenjunga
Set to begin on April 7, 2025, the Kangchenjunga expedition marks a significant milestone as it targets India’s highest peak, which stands at over 8,000 meters. This challenging ascent will be led by Col Ranveer Singh Jamwal, Director of NIMAS, and will include a team of five climbers and three support staff. NIMAS has previously achieved the summit of the highest peaks in 27 Indian states, and conquering Kangchenjunga will complete the challenge of summiting peaks in all 28 states.
