India Launches First Indigenous Pollution Control Vessel

In a landmark achievement for India’s maritime capabilities, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh officially launched the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) ‘Samudra Pratap’ on January 5, 2026, in Goa. This vessel, constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL), marks a significant stride towards achieving self-sufficiency, or _Aatmanirbharta_, in shipbuilding. Notably, ICGS Samudra Pratap boasts over 60% indigenous content, making it the first pollution control vessel designed entirely in India and the largest in the Indian Coast Guard fleet to date.

The introduction of ICGS Samudra Pratap will vastly enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), particularly in pollution control, firefighting, maritime safety, and environmental protection. This vessel is equipped for extended surveillance and response missions across India’s expansive maritime boundaries.

Advancing India’s Maritime Ecosystem

During the commissioning ceremony, Raksha Mantri highlighted the vessel as a testament to India’s evolving defense industrial ecosystem that adeptly handles intricate manufacturing challenges. He mentioned ongoing efforts to boost indigenous ship content to 90% in the future. “ICGS Samudra Pratap is not solely designed for pollution control, but its multiple integrated capabilities will bolster coastal patrol and maritime safety,” he stated, emphasizing the modern design and operational readiness to tackle contemporary maritime challenges.

Enhanced Capabilities and Environmental Responsibility

With advanced pollution detection systems, dedicated response boats, and modern firefighting equipment, ICGS Samudra Pratap is equipped to operate efficiently even in adverse sea conditions. Shri Rajnath Singh described marine environmental protection as both a strategic necessity and a moral responsibility. He praised the ICG for its swift response capabilities, positioning India among a select group of nations with robust environmental protection measures. “The ability to manage pollution incidents effectively is vital for safeguarding marine biodiversity and supporting coastal communities,” he added.

Maritime Security and Inclusivity

Addressing the broader implications of the vessel’s launch, Shri Rajnath Singh asserted that a clean sea is integral to safe trade and environmental security. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to fulfilling its maritime responsibilities, tying the commissioning of Samudra Pratap to the nation’s overarching maritime vision. On a noteworthy note, ICGS Samudra Pratap will also be pioneering inclusivity with two women officers on board, reflecting the Indian Coast Guard’s progress towards a gender-neutral workforce.

Future Endeavors of the Indian Coast Guard

Shri Rajnath Singh reiterated the government’s dedication to strengthening India’s maritime sector amid evolving threats, indicating a shift towards a more proactive Indian Coast Guard. By focusing on intelligence-driven operations and enhancing ICG’s human resources, the government aims to elevate the forces’ capabilities. He encouraged the ICG to take on a global leadership role in maritime governance and cooperation.

As Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant and other dignitaries attended the launch, the ambition encapsulated in ICGS Samudra Pratap serves as a promise not only for India’s maritime security but for a cleaner, more sustainable oceanic environment, ultimately benefiting all humankind.
