India Launches First Easy Connect Flight from Varanasi

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing air travel accessibility, Civil Aviation Minister Shri Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu inaugurated India’s first ‘Easy Connect’ flight from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi on June 25, 2026. This milestone is part of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision to establish India as a global aviation hub, providing seamless international connectivity for passengers traveling from Tier-II and Tier-III cities.

Aiming for Global Aviation Hub Status

The Hub-and-Spoke model is designed to make India the preferred aviation destination for domestic travelers by 2030, and internationally by 2047. This strategy not only focuses on improving air connectivity but also seeks to boost trade, tourism, investment, and regional economic development. Projections suggest that by 2030, developing aviation hubs could lead to the creation of around 400,000 direct and indirect jobs, contributing an additional USD 30 billion to India’s GDP. By 2047, the cumulative impact could support approximately 16 million jobs and add nearly USD 1.4 trillion to the economy.

Remarks from the Civil Aviation Minister

During the launch event, Minister Ram Mohan Naidu expressed optimism about this significant move. He stated, “Today we take a major step forward towards realizing our vision of making air travel more accessible and building a future-ready, self-reliant Indian aviation industry that is efficient, inclusive, and globally competitive.” He emphasized that the new hub-and-spoke model will revolutionize travel for citizens across India, enabling them to embark on international journeys directly from their home cities.

To mark the launch, the Minister presented commemorative boarding passes to the first passengers checking in for the inaugural flight. The event was attended by several senior officials, including Shri Samir Kumar Sinha, Secretary of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, and other prominent figures from the aviation sector.

Streamlined Travel Experience

Under the Hub-and-Spoke model, international travelers can complete check-in, immigration, and customs procedures at their local airport, setting a precedent for efficient travel. For instance, a passenger starting their journey from Varanasi will finalize all departure formalities there before flying to a designated Indian hub, such as Delhi.

To maintain operational integrity and security, the system incorporates several safeguards. Both domestic and international legs of the journey are classified as international operations. Separate boarding passes with identifiers for domestic and international travelers are issued to prevent confusion. Additionally, international passengers traveling within this framework will not have access to customs facilities at hub airports.

The initiation of Hub-and-Spoke international operations from Varanasi represents a significant advancement in India’s aviation landscape, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fostering inclusive and globally competitive air services for citizens across the nation.
