India Launches Barrier-Free Tolling for Hassle-Free Highway Travel

In a groundbreaking advancement towards a seamless travel experience on India’s highways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has rolled out the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) Tolling System at the Gharaunda Toll Plaza on the Panipat–Jalandhar section of National Highway-44. This innovative system is designed to eliminate the need for vehicles to stop or slow down during toll collection, utilizing cutting-edge Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) technology.

The MLFF system represents a significant evolution from traditional toll plazas. High-performance sensors and cameras are mounted on overhead gantries to automatically identify vehicles and deduct fees via FASTag. This allows drivers to maintain highway speeds, enhancing travel efficiency.

Enhancing the Travel Experience

The introduction of the MLFF tolling system is expected to usher in a new era of convenience for travelers. Key benefits include:

  • Zero Waiting Time: With the removal of physical toll barriers, vehicles can move without interruption, drastically reducing delays and congestion.
  • Fuel and Time Savings: By negating the need for frequent braking and acceleration, the system contributes to lower fuel consumption and quicker journey times.

Key Features of MLFF Tolling

The MLFF system utilizes gantry-based toll collection ensuring that user fees are collected automatically as vehicles pass beneath the installed structures. These gantries maintain a vertical clearance of approximately 5.5 to 6.0 meters, accommodating all authorized vehicles smoothly.

To enhance operational efficiency, strict enforcement actions will be in place to prevent unauthorized parking and traffic stoppages within 200 meters of the tolling area. This will help maintain a steady flow of traffic.

Monitoring and Payment System

Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs) and local enforcement agencies will monitor the MLFF routes to deter violations, including number plate tampering and toll evasion. To ensure transparency, NHAI has implemented an e-Notice mechanism. If a toll payment fails due to various reasons like insufficient balance, users will receive an e-Notice.

Road users can check and manage their e-Notices via a designated NIC portal, simplifying the payment process. Payments must be completed within 72 hours at standard rates, but late payments may incur higher fees.

Important User Advisory

NHAI urges all highway users to keep their FASTag balances sufficient and ensure their tags are active. Adhering to traffic rules and maintaining compliance with signage in MLFF zones is essential for a smooth travel experience.

This rollout follows the successful implementation of MLFF tolling in Gujarat, Delhi, and Rajasthan, marking another strategic step towards a modern and efficient highway network in India. By harnessing advanced technology for toll collection, NHAI is committed to enhancing traveler convenience and promoting a sustainable road transport ecosystem.
