India Launches Ambitious Program to Train Arbitrators
In a notable stride toward enhancing its legal framework, India has initiated the first assessment cycle of the IICA Arbitrator Qualifying Assessment Program (AQAP) from April 24-26, 2026, at the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) Campus in Manesar. This pioneering program, organized by the Centre of Excellence in Alternative Dispute Resolution (CEADR), aims to cultivate a cadre of skilled and internationally recognized arbitrators, with the vision of positioning India as a global arbitration hub under the Viksit Bharat initiative.
High-Profile Endorsements
Shri Gyaneshwar Kumar Singh, Director-General & CEO of IICA, opened the event by welcoming the chief guest, Justice (Retd.) Hemant Gupta, a former Judge of the Supreme Court of India and ex-Chairperson of the India International Arbitration Centre. He was joined by independent experts Shri Anish Wadia C.Arb and Shri AJ Jawad, who played a crucial role in the assessment process.
Need for Change in Arbitration Practices
While presiding over the assessment, Justice Hemant Gupta stressed the importance of shifting from an ad hoc approach to a more market-driven, efficient model of arbitration. He praised the rigorous framework of the three-day assessment, which aligns with global standards, and urged participants to embrace their roles as arbitrators. He stated that building confidence in arbitration is a shared responsibility among all stakeholders.
India’s Vision for Dispute Resolution
Emphasizing the need for an efficient dispute resolution system, Shri Gyaneshwar Kumar Singh pointed out that if India desires to become a developed nation with a thriving economy, it must prioritize speedy and cost-effective arbitration. He noted the preference of international businesses for arbitration as a means of resolving disputes, citing concerns over the backlog of cases that impede economic growth and investment. He also referenced the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) as a step toward legal reform but recognized that more extensive infrastructure reforms are essential.
Commitment to Excellence in Arbitration
In his vote of thanks, Prof (Dr) Naveen Sirohi, Head of CEADR at IICA, reiterated the centre’s commitment to enhancing the dispute resolution ecosystem in India. He expressed gratitude towards all experts and acknowledged the efforts of participants and the IICA organizing team in successfully completing this flagship program.
To further its mission, CEADR at IICA is transforming the ADR landscape through a series of significant initiatives, including:
- IICA Certified Mediator Program (ICMP) – An extensive 100+ hours online program now in its 23rd batch.
- IICA Certified Arbitration Professional (ICAP) – A comprehensive 250+ hours hybrid program currently in its 2nd batch.
- Arbitrator Qualifying Assessment Program (AQAP) – A rigorous three-day assessment designed to produce top-tier arbitrators.
