India Launches 250 MW Solar Project at Defence Land in Uttar Pradesh

In a significant advancement for energy security and renewable energy, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has greenlit the establishment of a 250 megawatt (MW) Solar Power Project with an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This groundbreaking initiative will take place on about 850 acres of unused defence land in Sitapur (Ex-Cantonment), Uttar Pradesh. Marking a first, the project will represent a large-scale solar generation facility uniquely designed for defence use.
This initiative aligns with the government’s dedication to promoting clean energy and reducing reliance on traditional energy sources. By enhancing long-term energy security for the Defence Forces, it is anticipated that this project will significantly cut down on costs associated with acquiring conventional power from the grid. As a result, substantial savings can be expected for the government over the project’s lifespan.
Collaboration with NTPC for Optimal Implementation
The execution of the Sitapur Solar Power Project will be managed by NTPC Limited through a competitive bidding process. This approach aims to achieve the best possible pricing and savings for defence organisations. Close cooperation will occur among the Ministry of Defence (MoD), Integrated Headquarters of MoD (Army), and the Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE) to ensure the project is executed effectively and on schedule.
A Blueprint for Future Renewable Projects
Once operational, the Sitapur Solar Power Project is expected to stand as one of India’s most prominent renewable energy installations on defence land. It will serve as a benchmark for future solar-plus-storage ventures within the defence sector. This project signifies an intersection of national security, energy security, technological advancement, and environmental responsibility.
The strategic initiative highlights the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to leveraging its resources to support national development objectives while safeguarding essential interests. The collaboration between MoD, NTPC, IHQ of MoD (Army), and DGDE demonstrates a concerted effort to modernize energy use and foster sustainability.
As India continues to expand its renewable energy capabilities, projects like the one in Sitapur will play a crucial role in transforming the nation’s energy landscape while enhancing the resilience and sustainability of its defence establishments.
