India Joins Global Push for 6G Leadership and Security
India has officially endorsed the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, marking a significant step in the country’s ambition to lead in the next generation of wireless communications. This commitment aligns India with 24 other nations that are also advocating for a framework rooted in openness, interoperability, safety, resilience, and innovation-driven competition.
The announcement reflects the vision of Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, who emphasizes India’s aspiration to transition from being a technology adopter to a key standard-setter in the global arena. Minister of State for Communications, Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, further highlights the importance of this transition for India’s technological future.
Expressing his enthusiasm on social media, Minister Scindia stated, “Bharat For 6G! An absolute delight to announce India’s endorsement of the Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security, joining 24 like-minded nations in advancing an open, interoperable, secure and resilient next-generation network.” The initiative was unveiled during the G20 Innovation Ministerial event, which took place in North Carolina, USA, on September 1-2, 2026, under the presidency of the United States.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India is tasked with advancing the country’s engagement under this Call to Action. It will collaborate with various stakeholders, including government agencies, industry leaders, and academic institutions to ensure the effective implementation of this initiative. Other countries involved in this agreement include Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and more.
The Call to Action emphasizes the necessity of secure digital infrastructure, which is crucial for technological competitiveness, economic growth, and national security. It acknowledges that the next-generation networks will not only underpin critical services but also require collaborative efforts to mitigate potential cyber, economic, and national security risks.
The outlined plan includes specific steps that participating governments must follow in the coming months. In the short term, each government is required to designate expert contacts for 6G, establish communication channels, and compile lists of relevant stakeholders. As the initiative develops, governments will engage with the telecommunications sector to explore emerging landscapes, identify barriers, and strategize for secure and resilient 6G supply chains over the long term.
This collaborative effort also aims to enhance research and development in 6G, promote transparency regarding supply chain vulnerabilities, and support the deployment of secure technologies worldwide. Importantly, the Call to Action assures participants that their involvement does not restrict their autonomy to pursue independent objectives or participate in existing industry-led standards.
India’s involvement in this initiative builds on its existing foundations, such as the Bharat 6G Vision and the Bharat 6G Alliance, and complements its ongoing work in international standardization. This proactive stance aligns with the larger vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) and the goal of achieving a developed nation by 2047.
