India Teams Up with Google to Showcase Cultural Heritage

The Ministry of Culture of India has announced a significant partnership with Google Arts & Culture aimed at amplifying the nation’s rich cultural heritage through advanced digital tools. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in a virtual event attended by Shri Vivek Aggarwal, Secretary of the Ministry, and Mr. Amit Sood, Vice President and Founder of Google Arts & Culture.

A New Era for India’s Heritage

This collaboration aims to illuminate the sprawling civilizational span of India, covering everything from monuments and archaeological sites under the care of the Archaeological Survey of India to the collections held by national museums. It will showcase the manuscript legacy documented under the Gyan Bharatam initiative, as well as the crafts, performing arts, and living traditions maintained by various institutions associated with the Ministry.

Highlighting the Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum

Central to this initiative is the Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum, which is currently taking shape in New Delhi. This museum promises to be a comprehensive chronicle of Indian history throughout the ages. The digital documentation of both the museum’s edifices and its extensive collection of artifacts will not only preserve these treasures but also offer an early glimpse into this monumental cultural project.

Expanding Access to Cultural Heritage

The MoU is part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to enhance accessibility and broaden its digital outreach. The aim is to allow India’s heritage to be explored in local languages and on various devices, ensuring a more inclusive approach. This initiative embodies a holistic strategy that intertwines preservation, public access, and the growth of India’s creative economy, leveraging resources from institutions of varying scales and collaborating with partners from diverse sectors.

Voices from the Leadership

Shri Vivek Aggarwal expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “India’s cultural heritage is a living inheritance. It belongs to every citizen and speaks to the whole world. Our partnership with Google Arts & Culture brings technology to bear on documenting, preserving, and sharing that inheritance.” He emphasized that making these treasures accessible in Indian languages would help bring more people closer to the narrative of Indian civilization.

A Deep Commitment to Preservation

Mr. Amit Sood echoed this sentiment, highlighting that Google Arts & Culture has been inspired by India’s extensive storytelling and artistic legacy for 15 years. He noted that this collaboration marks a shared dedication to conserving India’s timeless treasures using state-of-the-art technologies. From safeguarding historic manuscripts to supporting the Yuge Yugeen Bharat Museum’s vision, Google’s role aims to merge ancient heritage with modern accessibility.

Looking Ahead

The signing of this MoU signifies the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to preserving India’s monumental heritage and promoting its creative economy through long-lasting partnerships. With this initiative, the rich tapestry of Indian culture is set to reach broader audiences both domestically and globally.
