India Internet Governance Forum 2023: A New Era of Digital Dialogue
The 4th edition of the India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF) kicked off recently at Bharat Mandapam, marking a significant milestone in the country’s digital landscape. The event was inaugurated by Sh. Jitin Prasada, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). With a population of over 1.4 billion and nearly 1 billion Internet users, India has established itself as a vibrant digital economy.
The Minister also pointed out how government initiatives have significantly reduced the digital divide. Technology has reached rural communities, creating opportunities for all. “Today, 95% of our villages are linked to 3G-4G connectivity, and our startup ecosystem has expanded to over 600 districts, with more than half led by women,” he noted. This progress demonstrates India’s commitment to inclusivity and innovation in the digital realm.
Embracing Artificial Intelligence for All
Artificial intelligence (AI) was a focal point of the discussions at the IIGF. Minister Prasada outlined the government’s vision to position India as a global leader in AI. “Our vision is to make AI in India and make AI work for India as well as AI for all,” he stated. The government has allocated ₹10,000 crore for the India AI Mission, which aims to democratize AI benefits and foster innovation.
With the world’s largest youth population and a thriving startup ecosystem, India is well-positioned for an AI revolution. The Minister emphasized the importance of ensuring that AI technologies are developed responsibly and ethically. This approach will not only benefit India but also contribute to global advancements in AI.
Towards a Sustainable and Secure Digital Future
The rapid growth of the digital economy brings environmental and security challenges. Minister Prasada addressed these issues, emphasizing India’s proactive steps to reduce the carbon footprint of its digital infrastructure. He called for the promotion of renewable energy and green innovations to create a sustainable digital future.
Cybersecurity was another critical topic. The Minister stressed the need for robust infrastructure and real-time threat detection systems. He highlighted the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in global Internet governance. India actively participates in forums like the UN’s Global Digital Compact and the Global Partnership on AI (GPAI). He concluded by urging all stakeholders to work together to shape a secure and inclusive digital landscape.
