India Inc. Experiences Festive Boost as Households Opt for Premium Upgrades

From smartphones to large appliances, Indian consumers embraced a spending spree during the Navratri-Dussehra season, reflecting a growing trend towards premium purchases. The recent reductions in Goods and Services Tax (GST) have empowered shoppers to expand their budgets across various categories, leading to a notable increase in sales. Retailers reported a significant uptick in demand for items such as televisions, washing machines, and air conditioners, marking a decade-high in festive sales.

Consumer Spending Trends

This festive season, consumers in India have shown a remarkable willingness to invest in high-value items. Products priced over Rs 20,000, including premium smartphones and large televisions, saw a surge in sales. The reduction in GST has played a crucial role in this trend, making these products more accessible to a broader audience. Anupam Bansal, Managing Director at Liberty Shoes, noted that sales have increased by 15-20% since Dussehra, largely due to the effective price relief from tax cuts. The most popular price range for consumers has been between Rs 1,000 and Rs 3,000, indicating a shift in purchasing behavior towards more premium offerings.

Growth in Home Appliances

Sales of home appliances have also experienced a significant boost this festive season. Air conditioners, in particular, have performed exceptionally well, with many consumers opting for higher-rated models. B Thiagarajan, Managing Director at Blue Star, reported that the momentum in AC sales is expected to continue until Diwali. Nilesh Gupta, director at Vijay Sales, highlighted a 20% year-on-year growth in sales during this period, with large televisions and washing machines also seeing impressive sales figures. The overall demand for durable goods, including dishwashers and TVs larger than 32 inches, has benefited from the recent GST cuts, which have made these items more affordable.

Regional Variations in Sales

The festive shopping season has revealed interesting regional trends in consumer behavior. According to Kamal Nandi, business head and EVP at Godrej Enterprises Group, non-metro markets have shown a remarkable growth rate of nearly 30% compared to last year, while metro areas have seen a more modest increase of about 12%. This disparity suggests that the impact of GST reductions has been particularly beneficial in non-metro regions, where consumers are increasingly willing to invest in premium appliances. The overall sentiment during Navratri has been positive, with many categories, including washing machines, experiencing growth rates exceeding 30%.

Premiumisation Across Categories

The trend of premiumisation has been evident across various sectors, including fashion and furniture. At Amazon, smartphones priced above Rs 20,000 saw a staggering 50% year-on-year growth, contributing to an overall increase in average selling prices by 30%. Fashion retailer Libas reported a similar trend, with sales rising by 40-50% compared to last year. In the furniture segment, Interio by Godrej noted a nearly 10% growth in the premium category, indicating a shift in consumer spending towards higher-end products. This trend reflects a broader change in consumer preferences, as shoppers increasingly prioritize quality and premium features in their purchases.
