India Hits Record Wind Capacity Addition of 6.05 GW

India has achieved a remarkable milestone in its renewable energy sector by adding an impressive 6.05 gigawatts (GW) of wind capacity during the fiscal year 2025-26. This landmark addition surpasses the previous record of 5.5 GW, which was set in FY 2016-17, reflecting a significant surge in the country’s wind energy development.
The 6.05 GW addition marks a nearly 46% increase compared to the capacity added in FY 2024-25, indicating a strong acceleration in India’s onshore wind deployment. This growth has led to the cumulative installed wind power capacity in India crossing 56 GW, signifying renewed momentum in the sector.
Key Factors Driving Growth
The impressive surge in wind capacity can be attributed to a combination of sustained policy support, improved project execution, and a maturing project pipeline across key states. Gujarat, Karnataka, and Maharashtra emerged as major contributors to this growth, bolstered by the increasing development of wind-solar hybrid projects and an ongoing expansion of green energy open access.
Government Initiatives to Boost Wind Energy
The Indian government has taken significant steps to promote the wind energy sector. These initiatives include the implementation of Concessional Custom Duty on certain components and raw materials essential for wind turbine manufacturing. Furthermore, a graded waiver of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges has been extended until June 2028. The introduction of competitive bidding mechanisms and the establishment of Wind Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) frameworks also play crucial roles in fostering growth.
Additionally, technical support provided by the National Institute of Wind Energy has further strengthened this burgeoning sector.
Contribution to Renewable Energy Goals
This record addition is poised to significantly enhance India’s renewable energy portfolio, reinforcing the nation’s target to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by the year 2030. Since the inception of its wind energy program in the early 1990s, India has developed a robust wind energy ecosystem supported by a comprehensive policy framework designed to facilitate grid-connected wind power projects.
