India Enhances Digital Access to Cultural Heritage with ICP 2.0
The Indian government has made significant strides in digitizing access to the country’s rich cultural heritage with the launch of the upgraded Indian Culture Portal (ICP) Version 2.0. Announced in March 2026, this revamped platform features modern technology designed to offer users seamless access to a variety of cultural resources.
With improvements ranging from a modern user interface to enhanced search capabilities, the upgraded portal is equipped to enhance public engagement and accessibility. Key features include multilingual support with content available in 22 Indian languages, thanks to integration with the BHASHINI platform. Additionally, an AI-powered chatbot named Bharti facilitates intelligent searches and content discovery.
User-Friendly Interface and Advanced Features
The new version of the portal boasts a responsive design that improves navigation for users. Users can utilize advanced search and filtering tools for easier access to cultural resources. The ICP 2.0 is also optimized as a Progressive Web Application (PWA), ensuring compatibility across desktops, tablets, and mobile devices.
The implementation of a decoupled architecture using React and Drupal 10 enhances performance, scalability, and security. Furthermore, new thematic sections and curated cultural collections have been added to boost public engagement.
Unifying Cultural Institutions
One of the portal’s objectives is to serve as a centralized platform that integrates digital resources from museums, libraries, archives, and other cultural institutions under the Ministry of Culture. Through standardized metadata exchange and APIs, the ICP 2.0 facilitates the effective onboarding of these organizations.
The primary goals of the upgraded portal focus on promoting wider public access to India’s cultural heritage, preserving it for future generations, and enabling virtual exploration of museums, monuments, and artworks. It supports students, researchers, and educators by providing authenticated cultural information, enhancing their learning experiences.
Global Accessibility and Public Engagement
ICP 2.0 aims to reach audiences worldwide with its global accessibility and user-friendly design that caters to all screen sizes. By promoting awareness of both tangible and intangible cultural elements, the portal fosters an inclusive approach to India’s heritage.
According to Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, these enhancements are part of the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting India’s heritage through modern technology.
