India Boosts Indigenous Space Launch with ₹200 Crore Support

India’s ambition to enhance its space capabilities takes a significant leap as the Technology Development Board (TDB) of the Department of Science & Technology (DST) partners with Agnikul Cosmos Private Limited. The collaboration, backed by a financial boost of ₹200 crore, will drive the development of an indigenous and reusable launch vehicle known as the Agnibaan RLV.

The Agnibaan RLV project aims to advance technology from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 and above to TRL 8. This financial support will be disbursed through Optionally Convertible Debentures (OCD). Unlike traditional rocket systems that recover only the first stage, the Agnibaan RLV is designed for full-system reusability. This innovative architecture promises to enable frequent and cost-effective launches while minimizing space debris.

Innovative Design for Reusable Launch Vehicles

Central to this groundbreaking initiative is a lightweight upper stage, precise orbital insertion capabilities, and a semi-cryogenic liquid propulsion system. This design aims to enhance mission flexibility while ensuring the launch system can be reused effectively.

Agnikul has already made strides in space technology, showcasing several innovative elements through its preceding tests. The company previously developed an orbital-class launch vehicle and the Agnilet, an advanced 3D-printed rocket engine. TDB has also supported prior endeavors of Agnikul in creating a modular launch vehicle targeting small satellite missions.

Expanding on Previous Achievements

The new program supported by the RDI Fund advances Agnikul’s technological pursuits further—from simply developing a launch vehicle to constructing a system focused on reusability and operational excellence. The Agnibaan RLV will feature a reusable upper-stage architecture and descent propulsion system, incorporating technologies for controlled descent and recovery.

The development program will concentrate on propulsive systems able to restart and achieve deep throttling—critical for successful descent and landing operations. This initiative aligns with the RDI Fund’s emphasis on advanced and reusable launch vehicles along with propulsion innovations in Space Technologies.

Government Support for Space Innovation

Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, expressed the crucial need for technologies that enhance the frequency and flexibility of satellite launches. He stated, “Reusability is a significant frontier in this sector. The Agnibaan RLV program reflects our approach to fostering indigenous technologies that require persistent investment for their advancement towards deployment.”

The leadership at Agnikul Cosmos highlighted the importance of integrating propulsion, vehicle design, guidance, recovery, and mission operations into a reliable system. They noted the unique support from TDB as indicative of the government’s commitment to backing technological innovations in India, aiming to establish Agnibaan as a world-class platform for repeatable access to space.
