India Bolsters Fertilizer Security with Key Shipments
In a major boost for India’s fertilizer security, four cargo ships transporting essential shipments of Urea, Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP), and Sulphur successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz last week. Despite ongoing global trade challenges, these vessels are en route to various Indian ports, including Krishnapatnam, Kakinada, Paradeep, and Mundra. Upon arrival, these imports will be promptly offloaded to enhance the nation’s fertilizer reserves and support its agricultural needs.
Strong Inventory Reserves
As of June 22, 2026, India boasts a robust fertilizer stock of 196.08 Lakh Tons, a notable increase from 168.67 Lakh Tons recorded during the same period last year. The inventory comprises:
- Urea: 81.44 Lakh Tons (up from 69.21 Lakh Tons last year)
- DAP: 20.92 Lakh Tons (up from 16.0 Lakh Tons last year)
- NPKs: 55.91 Lakh Tons (up from 46.13 Lakh Tons last year)
- MOP: 12.68 Lakh Tons (up from 10.68 Lakh Tons last year)
- SSP: 25.13 Lakh Tons (compared to 26.65 Lakh Tons last year)
This healthy inventory reflects the high agricultural activity in the country, with total fertilizer sales reaching 153.4 Lakh Tons from March 1, 2026, to June 21, 2026. This marks a growth of 13.2 Lakh Tons from last year’s sales of 140.2 Lakh Tons during the same timeframe. Sales included 79.1 Lakh Tons of Urea, 34.8 Lakh Tons of NPKs, and 19.8 Lakh Tons of DAP (including TSP).
Empowering Domestic Production
To mitigate the impact of unpredictable global market shifts, the Indian government has enhanced local manufacturing capabilities while strategically managing import arrivals. Following the recent crisis, domestic production surged to an impressive 133.12 Lakh Tons, providing a solid foundation for the country’s fertilizer needs. Additionally, total imports reached 43.69 Lakh Tons at Indian ports during this period, striking a balance between homegrown production and international sourcing.
Successful Global Tendership
India has made significant progress in its latest global tender evaluations, successfully securing 17.70 Lakh Tons of Urea. With these acquisitions, the nation has now contracted over 90 Lakh Tons of Urea and P&K fertilizers from the international market, strategically aimed at supporting the Kharif season.
The government’s procurement efforts have been bolstered through active diplomatic relations with 28 Indian missions worldwide, establishing diverse import channels across several international corridors. Urea supplies have been secured from countries including Oman, Malaysia, Vietnam, Georgia, Nigeria, Russia, Finland, Egypt, Algeria, Turkey, and the Netherlands. DAP and NPK shipments have been consolidated via the Red Sea shipping route from Russia, Morocco, Egypt, the USA, Jordan, South Korea, Tunisia, and Saudi Arabia.
