India and Korea Forge Stronger Ties for Climate Action

The Republic of India and the Republic of Korea have announced a significant boost in their bilateral cooperation to tackle global sustainability challenges. Both nations are committed to practical collaboration aimed at addressing pressing issues in climate change, maritime affairs, and Arctic research. Their collective efforts are set to promote a sustainable future through enhanced engagement in environmental matters.

The two countries have reaffirmed their dedication to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, focusing on an integrated approach to environmental stewardship. This commitment includes cooperation on managing natural resources sustainably—covering land, air, water, biodiversity, and waste management.

Climate Change Cooperation

Both India and Korea have expressed their support for a rules-based international order and reiterated their commitment to the Paris Agreement. They recognized the urgent need for heightened climate action to counter the unparalleled climate crisis threatening both human and ecological systems. In this regard, they welcomed the completion of a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. This MOC paves the way for cooperative, investment-driven mitigation projects and aims to achieve their respective Nationally Determined Contributions while reinforcing their strategic partnership in climate action.

The countries will work together on various climate-related issues, including developing carbon markets, advancing the Article 6.2 cooperative approaches, and promoting renewable energy and low-carbon technologies.

Environmental Cooperation and Sustainable Development

In a bid to bolster environmental cooperation, the two sides have decided to formalize their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on Climate and Environmental issues. India welcomed Korea’s new membership in the International Solar Alliance (ISA), while Korea celebrated India’s joining of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI).

Oceans and Marine Sustainability

Recognizing the critical role of oceans in economic development and ecological balance, the two nations pledged to enhance cooperation in marine science, sustainable fishing practices, coastal ecosystem protection, and the prevention of marine pollution. They aim to strengthen collaboration in the blue economy and facilitate closer interactions between scientific institutions and maritime agencies.

Arctic Research and Polar Cooperation

India and Korea have acknowledged their increasing involvement in Arctic research and scientific collaboration. Considering the importance of the Arctic region in understanding climate change, the two sides agreed to expand their cooperation in Arctic science and shipping initiatives.

They will work towards closer collaboration between their Arctic research institutions, joint research initiatives, and active participation in international polar research programs.

Way Forward

Both nations reaffirm their dedication to advancing practical cooperation that promotes sustainable development and climate action. They are optimistic that the expanded cooperation outlined in their joint statement will yield innovative, scalable solutions that foster sustainable development in the Indo-Pacific region and beyond.
