India and Japan Strengthen Business Ties: A New Era of Partnership
The partnership between India and Japan is evolving swiftly beyond traditional trade interactions, focusing on critical areas such as economic security, technology, and clean energy. Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, emphasized the importance of this relationship during a round-table discussion with prominent figures from Keidanren, Japan’s leading business federation, which encompasses over 1,500 major companies.
Shri Goyal urged for a robust business-to-business collaboration, pointing out that the environment for doing business in India is improving rapidly. He called on Japanese investors to enhance their presence in India, with a vision to double the number of Japanese companies operating in the nation by the end of this decade. The minister also highlighted that 2026 will mark the ‘India-Japan Year of Shared Horizons,’ commemorating 75 years of diplomatic ties.
Prominent Meetings and Investment Opportunities
During the ongoing visit, Shri Goyal has engaged in discussions with key leaders from major corporations such as Sumitomo Corporation, Meiji Seika Pharma, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Tokyo Electron. These meetings aimed at exploring potential expansions and increased investment opportunities in India.
At Tokyo Electron, he interacted with the company’s top executives, including Mr. Takeshi Okubo and Mr. Vaidya Bharadwaj, emphasizing the critical role of semiconductor manufacturing in the bilateral relationship. His visit to MinebeaMitsumi Inc. also highlighted their plans for a semiconductor plant in India, reflecting a growing focus on technology investment in the partnership.
Strategic Discussions and Future Collaborations
The strategic dimension of India-Japan relations was further underscored in a meeting with Mr. Ichikawa Keiichi, Secretary General of Japan’s National Security Secretariat, showcasing the interplay between economic and security interests.
In the afternoon, Shri Goyal participated in a Round-table dedicated to the Capital Goods, Machinery, and Automotive sectors, with around 70 businesses from both countries in attendance. This engagement aimed to strengthen connections between Japanese firms and India’s expanding supplier ecosystem, especially involving Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
A Historic Business Delegation
Arriving in Tokyo with India’s largest-ever business delegation, which includes over 200 representatives from various industries, Shri Goyal’s visit is a significant step towards deepening trade ties. The delegation encompasses sectors like semiconductors, clean energy, and automotive, and will travel to major cities—Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka—over four days from August 24 to 27.
This delegation, orchestrated in collaboration with leading Indian industry associations and the Ministry of Commerce, represents a collective endeavor to foster a robust India-Japan Special Strategic Global Partnership.
Shri Goyal’s engagements throughout the day reflect the momentum in the India-Japan economic partnership, reinforcing India’s commitment to boost trade, investment, and technology integration in pursuit of mutual growth.
