India Advances Renewable Energy with Focus on Integration and Technology

During the Leadership Spotlight Session on the third day of India Energy Week 2026 in Goa, Santosh Kumar Sarangi, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, stressed the need for India’s renewable energy sector to prioritize capacity expansion, grid integration, and advanced technology. Sarangi’s remarks came as India aims to strengthen its position as a leader in renewable energy adoption, focusing on a target of over 600 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by fiscal year 2030.

Speaking at the session titled The Solar and Wind Opportunity: Realising the Dual Potential of Scaling India’s Renewables Outlook, Sarangi revealed that the current renewable capacity stands at approximately 267 GW. He underscored that future policies will concentrate on enhancing grid integration, improving distributed renewable energy management, and encouraging domestic manufacturing within the solar and wind sectors to decrease reliance on imports.

Industry Leaders Discuss Progress and Future Directions

Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director of Vikram Solar, provided an industry perspective, emphasizing the significance of India’s early adoption of renewable energy. While he acknowledged the challenges faced in domestic manufacturing and supply chains during initial scaling, he noted that sustained policy guidance has empowered India to become a prominent player in the global renewable energy sector.

Chaudhary highlighted that the next phase of growth will necessitate greater vertical integration, access to cutting-edge technology, and enhanced participation in global markets. This shift is crucial for establishing India as a long-term manufacturing hub for renewable energy technologies.

Global Perspectives on Solar Energy Economics

Erik Solheim, President of the International Advisory Board, GH2 India, presented a global policy perspective, stating that solar energy’s rise as one of the most affordable power sources worldwide has transformed the energy transition into both an economic and environmental imperative.

Aditya Pyasi, CEO of the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association, elaborated on the advancements in India’s wind industry, noting the transition from initial deployment to more comprehensive manufacturing and international integration. He stressed that to sustain future growth, the sector needs policy stability, indigenization of components, and continued attention to job creation in an increasingly unpredictable geopolitical landscape.
