India Accelerates Electric Vehicle Adoption with Major Initiatives

The Indian government is making significant strides in promoting electric vehicles (EVs) and their supporting infrastructure nationwide, including in the state of Tripura. Through various innovative schemes, the government is aiming to enhance the adoption of EVs and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, creating a more sustainable future for transportation.

Among the key initiatives is the second phase of the ‘Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric & Hybrid Vehicles in India’ (FAME India) Scheme. Launched in April 2019, this scheme has a generous outlay of ₹11,500 crore and will run until March 2024, aiming to bolster the EV market in India.

Supporting this initiative is the ‘Production Linked Incentive’ (PLI) Scheme for the automobile and auto component industry, approved in September 2021 with a massive investment of ₹25,938 crore. This scheme aims to enhance manufacturing capabilities for advanced automotive technology products, including EVs, by encouraging domestic value addition.

Furthermore, the government is advancing battery technology with the PLI Scheme for Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) battery storage, established with a budget of ₹18,100 crore. This initiative seeks to create a competitive domestic manufacturing environment for 50 GWh of ACC batteries.

Driving Innovation: PM E-DRIVE and More

Another significant scheme, the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE), was implemented in April 2024 with an investment of ₹10,900 crore. This program aims to support various electric vehicles, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, trucks, buses, and ambulances, while also promoting the development of public charging stations.

The PM E-Bus Sewa-Payment Security Mechanism (PSM), which came into effect on October 28, 2024, allocates ₹3,435 crore for the deployment of over 38,000 electric buses. This scheme aims to provide payment security to operators in case public transport authorities default on payments.

Further promoting the sector, the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI) was established in March 2024 to boost electric car production in the country.

Enhancing Charging Infrastructure

The installation of EV charging stations has been streamlined to allow private entrepreneurs to participate, with the Ministry of Power issuing new guidelines to strengthen charging infrastructure across national highways. These guidelines encourage an integrated and interoperable charging ecosystem, including battery-swapping stations.

Funding for public charging stations has been allocated through both the FAME-II Scheme and the PM E-DRIVE scheme, amounting to ₹912.50 crore and ₹2,000 crore respectively. This funding is crucial for expanding the charging infrastructure across India, including Tripura.

As part of encouraging wider EV adoption, the government has provided substantial subsidies under various schemes. As of January 26, 2026, the FAME-II Scheme has incentivized over 16 lakh vehicles across various segments, distributing ₹6,558.19 crore in incentives. Additionally, 4 public charging stations have already been established in Tripura.

Future Initiatives and Support

The PM E-DRIVE scheme shows impressive potential, with targets to incentivize over 28 lakh vehicles and provide financial support for numerous electric buses. Over 13,800 e-buses will be deployed as part of this initiative in major cities, marking a transformational shift in public transportation.

Under the PLI Auto scheme, the government has disbursed over ₹2,377 crore as incentives to approved applicants, primarily benefiting EV manufacturers. This holistic approach to EV promotion underscores the Indian government’s commitment to a greener future.

This comprehensive push for electric vehicles not only enhances India’s manufacturing capabilities but also aligns with global efforts toward sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation solutions.
