Income Tax Department Welcomes 97 Elite Athletes to Its Ranks
Mumbai experienced a remarkable moment in sports and public service today as the Income Tax Department welcomed 97 exceptional athletes into its workforce. This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to both recognizing sporting achievements and integrating high-caliber talent into public service. The Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, Shri Alok Kumar, handed over the appointment letters to the newly inducted sportspersons at Aayakar Bhawan, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their careers.
Successful Recruitment Amidst Strong Competition
The recruitment process, initiated through a notification on January 7, 2026, attracted an impressive 3,595 applications from sportspersons across a variety of sports disciplines. After a stringent evaluation process that adhered to established selection criteria, 97 candidates were chosen based on merit. This selection not only emphasizes the quality of applicants but also impressively highlights that over 80% of those selected have competed at the international level.
Highlighting Remarkable Talents
The newly inducted athletes feature a diverse range of talents. Among them is Shri Tanush Kotian, an all-rounder with the Mumbai Ranji Cricket Team and a member of the India Test Squad. Shri Abhishek has also made waves, bringing home two Gold Medals from the 1st World Yogasana Sports Championship held in Ahmedabad in 2026. Additionally, Ms. Tejal Hasabnis, who proudly represents the Indian Women’s Cricket team, and Shri Akash, a para-sportsperson who secured a Team Gold Medal at the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in New Delhi (2024) and another Gold Medal at the WSPS World Cup in Al Ain, Dubai (2025), contribute to the department’s growing legacy of excellence.
