IGNOU Convocation: Minister Highlights NEP 2020 Impact

At the 38th Convocation of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) Regional Centre in Jammu, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh emphasized the transformative potential of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for open universities. He praised IGNOU’s role in making education accessible to those facing socio-economic barriers and highlighted the university’s remarkable growth since its establishment in 1985.

NEP 2020: A Catalyst for Open Education

During his online address, Dr. Jitendra Singh discussed how NEP 2020 is set to enhance the ‘Open University Culture’ in India. He pointed out that the policy’s features, such as flexible entry and exit points, choice-based credit systems, and varied learning opportunities, align perfectly with the mission of institutions like IGNOU. This approach allows students to tailor their educational journeys according to personal interests and evolving job market demands.

Dr. Singh noted that IGNOU has already implemented many of these progressive features, enabling students to switch subjects or combine courses based on their preferences. This flexibility is crucial for learners who may need to adapt their studies to meet changing employment needs. The Minister’s remarks underscored the importance of such innovations in fostering a more inclusive educational environment.

IGNOU’s Global Reach and Innovations

Dr. Singh commended IGNOU for its impressive growth, stating it is now the largest university globally by student enrollment, boasting an A++ accreditation. He highlighted the university’s innovative programs, which include modular designs and multimedia-based learning, catering to diverse student needs. These features allow learners to progress at their own pace, making education more accessible and adaptable.

Furthermore, the Minister praised IGNOU’s international outreach, which includes 25 overseas study centers across 15 countries. He mentioned the collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) to offer a Basic Hindi Awareness program to foreign nationals in nine countries. Additionally, through the e-VidyaBharati and e-Aarogya Bharati Network Project, IGNOU is providing 45 online programs in 19 African nations, showcasing its commitment to global education.

Empowering Youth Through Government Initiatives

In his address, Dr. Singh also highlighted various government initiatives aimed at empowering youth, such as the Mudra Yojana and PM Vishwakarma Yojana. The Mudra Yojana provides collateral-free loans of up to Rs. 20 lakhs to skilled youth for starting their ventures, while the PM Vishwakarma Yojana supports traditional artisans with advanced toolkits and training stipends. These programs aim to alleviate financial burdens and promote self-employment opportunities.

Dr. Singh emphasized the significance of skill development, particularly through specialized bachelorโ€™s degree programs designed for defense services. He acknowledged the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in modern education, praising IGNOU’s integration of technology, including the six SWAYAM PRABHA channels that offer quality educational content online.

A Milestone for Jammu’s Educational Landscape

Dr. Singh expressed his satisfaction with the inauguration of the new IGNOU campus in Jammu, which he described as a long-awaited milestone for the region. He noted that this campus represents a significant gift from Prime Minister Modi to the youth and aspiring learners of Jammu. The Minister highlighted that nearly 6 lakh students have enrolled at the Jammu Regional Centre, with over 2 lakh new enrollments since 2020.

In closing, Dr. Singh urged graduates to actively participate in realizing Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India) by 2047, the centenary of India’s independence. He encouraged the graduates to embrace their roles in the nation’s transformative journey, emphasizing the unique opportunity they have to witness and contribute to India’s growth.

During this convocation, a total of 11,293 students from the IGNOU Regional Centre Jammu were recognized for their achievements, with 5,852 earning bachelor’s degrees, 4,988 master’s degrees, 316 diplomas, and 137 certificates.
