Gujarat to Launch First Driver-Owned Taxi Service, Bharat Taxi

On June 27, 2026, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, will officially launch Bharat Taxi, India’s first cooperation-based taxi service. The event is set to take place at the Mahatma Mandir Convention and Exhibition Centre in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. This innovative platform was initially soft-launched in December 2025, and marks a significant stride towards realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’ in the transport and mobility sector.

Empowering Drivers through Cooperation

Bharat Taxi stands out as a digital mobility platform that emphasizes cooperative principles. It embodies the concept of ‘Saarthi Hi Maalik,’ where taxi drivers are not just service providers but also participants and stakeholders in the business. This model allows them to achieve economic empowerment, gain social security, and enjoy ownership of the platform.

The launch event will also see the attendance of dignitaries including Gujarat’s Chief Minister, Shri Bhupendra Bhai Patel, and Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Harsh Sanghavi, along with key representatives from the cooperative sector and over 4,000 ‘Saarthis’ (drivers) associated with Bharat Taxi.

Significant Cooperative Support

Bharat Taxi was developed by Sahkar Taxi Cooperative Limited with the backing of several prominent cooperative institutions, such as NCDC, GCMMF (Amul), NDDB, NAFED, IFFCO, KRIBHCO, NABARD, and NCEL. Currently, the service is generating positive momentum in Gujarat, where more than 1.5 lakh out of 7 lakh Saarthis nationwide are based.

Additionally, the program aims to honor the top-performing Saarthis with certificates, while agreements will be signed among various institutions to bolster collaborative efforts.

Expanding Across Gujarat

Bharat Taxi plans to launch its services in 14 major cities throughout Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, and Rajkot, with the goal of making these services available within the next month. With over 37 lakh customers already utilizing Bharat Taxi’s offerings, the platform is poised for broad acceptance in the state.

A New Model for Mobility

Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act of 2002, Bharat Taxi operates on a zero-commission basis, allowing Saarthis to reap the full benefits of their earnings. Furthermore, drivers are granted access to insurance, loans, pensions, and various government social security schemes. For customers, Bharat Taxi promises safe and reliable travel, collaborating with the Gujarat Police to provide a surge-free pricing model, and a choice of transportation options such as bikes, autos, and cabs.

A Vision for the Future

With a commitment to establishing a cooperative-driven development model in the mobility sector, Bharat Taxi aims to set new standards for inclusive and self-reliant transportation. In the future, the platform intends to expand throughout all states and major cities across India, establish dedicated support centers, enhance social security measures for Saarthis, and integrate with national digital public infrastructure to create a robust cooperative mobility ecosystem.
