Gujarat MPs Collaborate for a Tuberculosis-Free India

In a significant move towards eradicating tuberculosis (TB), Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, engaged in a crucial strategy dialogue with Members of Parliament (MPs) from Gujarat. This meeting, part of the “Parliamentarians Championing a TB Mukt Bharat” initiative, took place at Garvi Gujarat Bhawan during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

The session was attended by Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Smt. Nimuben Bambhaniya, along with various MPs from both Houses representing Gujarat. Shri Nadda took this opportunity to emphasize India’s commendable progress in the TB battle under the leadership of Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. He reported a remarkable 21% decline in TB cases from 2015 to 2024, with a treatment success rate nearing 90%, surpassing global averages as highlighted in recent WHO reports.

Gujarat’s Potential in TB Elimination

During the dialogue, Nadda pointed out that Gujarat, due to its strong health infrastructure, swift adoption of innovations, and ownership of health programs, is well-positioned to be a frontrunner in next-generation TB elimination strategies. He called on the MPs to take initiative in their local constituencies by implementing specific actions aimed at reducing TB incidence.

Strategic Parliamentary Actions

Nadda outlined several stewardship actions for the parliamentarians to consider, including:

  • Regularly reviewing constituency scorecards that track TB indicators.
  • Collaborating with state departments to enhance program implementation.
  • Institutionalizing TB reviews through District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meetings.
  • Resolving on-ground implementation challenges in a timely manner.

Moreover, he urged the MPs to combine TB awareness efforts with existing Jan Sampark initiatives, engaging with local media and organizing public events to reduce stigma and encourage early testing and treatment.

Community Involvement

Nadda also encouraged organizing constituency-level Ni-kshay Shivirs and expanding the Ni-kshay Mitra network, aimed at providing sustained community support through nutrition, counseling, and assistance for those undergoing TB treatment.

During the dialogue, Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava discussed emerging policy directions, emphasizing community-centered screening and the importance of nutritional support in TB management. Further insights were provided by Smt. Aradhana Patnaik, Additional Secretary and Mission Director of the National Health Mission, who presented progress updates on the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and stressed the critical role of parliamentary engagement in the campaign to achieve a tuberculosis-free India.

The commitment from Gujarat’s MPs to enhance constituency-driven TB elimination efforts reflects a unified approach toward creating a healthy, TB-free nation. They pledged to support a coordinated, outcome-focused, and community-centered approach in the ongoing battle against tuberculosis.
