Great Indian Bustard Conservation Breeding Reaches New Milestone

The Great Indian Bustard (GIB) conservation program has achieved another significant milestone, welcoming three new chicks into its breeding initiative. With these additions, the total number of chicks hatched in the fourth year of this captive breeding effort has now reached 26, according to Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav.

Minister Yadav shared the latest updates via a post on social media, highlighting that the three new chicks hatched from a combination of one wild-collected egg and two eggs laid in captivity. The GIB captive population has now grown to an impressive 94 birds, with expectations for more hatching in the upcoming season.

Breeding Successes and Strategies

This year has seen notable success in chick production, with figures revealing that 18 of the 26 chicks have resulted from artificial insemination, while four have hatched through natural methods, and an additional four from wild-collected eggs. This innovative breeding program aims not just to increase the population of GIB but also to enhance their genetic diversity.

Wild Hatching Initiatives

In a strategic move to boost genetic diversity and lower the risks posed by predation, the program has engaged in a jumpstart intervention. This has led to the successful hatching of three chicks in the wilds of Rajasthan, further indicating the positive impact of exchanging wild eggs for the breeding program.

The Great Indian Bustard, a critically endangered bird species, is well-known for its striking appearance and vital ecological role. Efforts like these are crucial for conserving this iconic species, and the recent progress offers hope for its future.

The continued success of the captive breeding program exemplifies the commitment of the Indian government and conservationists to protect and enhance the population of the Great Indian Bustard. As more chicks are expected in this breeding season, the efforts to secure this majestic bird’s place in the wild remain strong.
