Government Strengthens India’s Innovation Landscape with New Initiatives

The Government of India is taking significant strides to foster innovation and entrepreneurship across the nation, particularly in states like Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan. Through a series of initiatives and schemes, the government aims to create an ecosystem conducive to the growth of innovators, entrepreneurs, and startups.

One of the pivotal initiatives is the launch of the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) scheme, which is designed to bolster cutting-edge technologies and deep-tech projects. With a substantial budget of Rs. 1 lakh crore over the next six years, the RDI scheme focuses on critical sectors such as energy security, climate action, and artificial intelligence applications in various fields including agriculture and education. The Department of Science & Technology (DST) leads this initiative to enhance research, development, and innovation in the private sector.

Boosting the Quantum Startup Sector

Under the National Quantum Mission (NQM), DST is committed to supporting startups specializing in quantum technologies, including quantum computing and quantum communication. By offering funding, access to advanced infrastructure, and mentorship opportunities, NQM has already provided financial backing to seven startups operating in this cutting-edge field.

Advancements in Cyber Physical Systems

The National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) is another key initiative, approved by the Union Cabinet with an outlay of Rs. 3660 crores. This mission has established 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs) at leading academic institutions across the country, facilitating the growth of over 800 startups in critical technology areas such as AI, IoT, and cybersecurity.

End-to-End Startup Support with NIDHI

Through the National Initiative for Developing and Harnessing Innovations (NIDHI) program, the government provides extensive support to startups from ideation to commercialization. Components such as PRAYAS offer prototyping grants for early-stage ideas, while providing seed funding and acceleration support to boost startup growth. So far, NIDHI has supported 2,254 innovators, with a significant portion hailing from Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.

Strengthening Industry-Academia Collaborations

The Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) works to strengthen the bond between academic research and market-ready products by supporting research through various Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). This structure ensures a smooth transition from laboratory innovations to commercially viable technologies.

Since the launch of the Startup India initiative in 2016, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has recognized nearly 200,000 startups, which have collectively created over 2.1 million jobs. Various schemes like the Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) and Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups (CGSS) are in place to assist startups at different stages of their business cycle.

Biotech and Deep Tech Support

In the biotech sector, the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) provides crucial early-stage funding through programs like the Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) and BioNEST. These initiatives have supported over 2,700 incubatees, resulting in more than 1,300 intellectual properties filed and over 800 products developed.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) also plays a vital role by offering support to deep tech startups in electronics and ICT through its Technology Incubation programs, while the Department of Space fosters growth in India’s space startup ecosystem through the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACe).

Furthermore, the initiative Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) encourages innovation in defense and aerospace sectors, providing grants to startups capable of advancing R&D in these critical areas.

The government has implemented numerous programs in collaboration with various states, such as State Startup Rankings and National Startup Awards, which have enhanced cooperation between the center and states and contributed to the overall development of India’s startup ecosystem. Over the last decade, substantial investments have established facilities to support science and technology-based startups, enabling countless students and innovators to pursue entrepreneurship. Overall, these initiatives have significantly bolstered India’s startup landscape, improving access to funding and fostering economic growth beyond urban centers. Notably, several DST-backed startups have achieved unicorn status, underlining the success of these government-supported programs.
