Government Strengthens Health Programs for Tribal Communities

The Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Shri Durgadas Uikey, announced in the Rajya Sabha that the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) is taking the lead in implementing vital health and nutrition programs across the nation. With an emphasis on enhancing healthcare access, the National Health Mission (NHM) focuses on developing health infrastructure and improving human resources in health facilities, particularly in tribal-dominated districts.

Key Initiatives Under NHM

The Government of India has launched several ambitious initiatives under the NHM aimed at improving healthcare delivery. Among these programs are the operationalization of Ayushman Arogya Mandir (AAM), the Free Drugs Service Initiative, and the Free Diagnostic Service Initiative, all designed to enhance healthcare accessibility. Additional services like National Ambulance Services, Mobile Medical Units, and a range of community health workers (ASHAs) are also being deployed to ensure round-the-clock healthcare support.

Moreover, programs such as the Prime Minister’s National Dialysis Programme and efforts under the Reproductive & Child Health initiative are critical in enhancing health standards. The focus extends to combating anaemia through the Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) strategy, supporting the Universal Immunization Programme, and numerous activities that cater to the overall well-being of mothers and children.

Comprehensive Health Strategies for Tribal Areas

The RMNCAH+N (Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, Adolescent Health and Nutrition) strategy is a key approach implemented by the MoHFW. It encompasses various interventions aimed at tackling undernutrition and enhancing awareness regarding nutritional deficiencies. Specific initiatives include:

  • Facility Based New-born Care: NICUs and SNCUs have been established in hospitals to care for vulnerable newborns.
  • Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC): This program promotes early skin-to-skin contact between low birth weight/pre-term babies and their caregivers.
  • Mothers’ Absolute Affection (MAA): Encouraging exclusive breastfeeding practices for infants and young children.
  • Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs): Establishment of facilities for treating children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM).
  • Lactation Management Centres: Providing safe milk options for sick and low birth weight infants.
  • Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB): Targeted programs to reduce anaemia prevalence across key demographic groups.

Alongside these initiatives, the Government has also launched Mission Poshan 2.0, which focuses on improving maternal nutrition and implementing effective feeding norms for infants and young children.

Aiming for a Healthier Future

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has also taken proactive steps towards addressing sickle cell anemia, as part of its National Mission aimed at eliminating this condition by 2047. By establishing Centers of Competence (CoCs) across multiple states, they will provide advanced diagnostic support and awareness generation. A total of 17 CoCs have been launched with an investment of around Rs. 52 crores in states including Telangana, Odisha, and Tamil Nadu.

Data from various surveys and agencies, such as the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), continuously inform these initiatives, highlighting crucial changes in malnutrition and maternal health among tribal districts. This data-driven approach ensures that the health programs are in line with the requirements of the communities they serve.
