Government Revamps Major Railway Stations for Future Growth
The Union Minister for Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, convened a meeting today to discuss the comprehensive redevelopment plans for several key railway stations, including Borivali, Ambala, and Mangaluru. Joined by Minister of State for Railways, Shri Ravneet Singh Bittu, the focus of the meeting was on enhancing passenger experience while minimizing disruptions to daily train operations.
During the review, Vaishnaw highlighted the importance of developing railway infrastructure that is ready for future demands. The meeting addressed current congestion issues and aimed to improve passenger convenience through the addition of platforms, wider Foot Over Bridges (FOBs), and enhanced inter-platform transfers. Key elements of the discussion included creating additional entry and exit points, optimizing circulation areas, and ensuring seamless integration with other transport modes.
Borivali and Kandivali Redevelopment Plans
One of the primary focal points of the meeting was Borivali Railway Station, a crucial interchange on the Western Railway line. The station currently supports 191 daily long-distance train services in addition to 1,200 suburban services, catering to approximately 365,000 passengers each day. With traffic expected to surge, the redevelopment plan seeks to alleviate congestion and improve passenger flow. Plans include additional platforms, expanded concourse areas, enhanced lifts and escalators, and upgraded access systems to facilitate smoother movement throughout the station.
To complement the improvements at Borivali, a parallel redevelopment of Kandivali station will take place. Located just 2 kilometers away, Kandivali will play a significant role in easing the burden on Borivali by accommodating future train operations. The collaborative development aims to enhance east-west connectivity, integrate with metro and road networks, and create a cohesive multimodal transport hub.
Ambala Station Upgrade
The meeting also reviewed the redevelopment strategy for Ambala Cantonment station, which serves 328 trains and handles over 44,000 passengers daily. Anticipating a surge in demand, the plan includes the construction of two new platforms and a broader 12-meter-wide FOB. Additional escalators and lifts will be added to optimize passenger circulation and assist those with mobility challenges. This project is designed to enhance access and connectivity, ultimately creating a more efficient and passenger-friendly environment.
Mangaluru Station Enhancements
Mangaluru Central station was another key area of focus, currently serving over 28,000 passengers. The proposed upgrades include the addition of two new full-length platforms, improved platform shelters, and enhanced passenger amenities. The aim is to alleviate crowding, especially during peak hours, and to enhance convenience for all travelers, including the elderly and differently-abled individuals.
Overall, the redevelopment initiatives at Borivali, Ambala, and Mangaluru are set to significantly improve passenger experience, operational efficiency, and infrastructure capacity across the railway network. These proposals will undergo further detailed examination and stakeholder consultations as the planning and implementation phases advance.
