Government Launches DDU-GKY 2.0 to Empower Rural Youth
The Ministry of Rural Development is gearing up to launch the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya-Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) 2.0 training batches across many States and Union Territories starting in October 2026. This initiative aims to equip rural youth with essential skills and boost their employability through placement-linked training programs.
In an update from the DDU-GKY 2.0 portal, the ministry has allocated a massive target of 5.6 lakh opportunities for over 1,200 projects to various Project Implementation Agencies (PIAs), with 24 States and Union Territories already on board. Additional states are in the process of completing their allocations. In total, about 2,015 training batches, expected to train around 70,000 rural youth, are set to commence across these regions in October 2026.
Focus on Skills for Employment
The DDU-GKY is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme specifically designed to offer skill training that leads to employment for economically disadvantaged rural youth. The training duration varies between three to twelve months, allowing for flexibility based on the requirements of the participants. All 31 participating States and Union Territories have been allocated over 9 lakh targets under the DDU-GKY 2.0 program for the 2026-28 two-year period.
States and Union Territories are tasked with mobilizing rural youth and organizing skill training linked to job placements, adhering to the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF). The aim is to ensure that beneficiaries gain sustainable employment after completing their training. The Ministry of Rural Development has emphasized the importance of this phase, urging the implementing authorities to accelerate the target allocations to PIAs so that the training batches can start on time.
Coordination and Timelines
States and Union Territories are expected to finalize allocations for PIAs by October 31, 2026. To maintain momentum as the program moves forward, the ministry is conducting review meetings in phases with the States and Union Territories. These meetings are designed to ensure that all preparations are in place for the timely commencement of training batches.
Through DDU-GKY 2.0, the government seeks to create a skilled workforce in rural India, providing young people with the tools they need for a brighter future in the job market.
