Government Intensifies Action Against Air Pollution in Delhi-NCR
In a significant move to combat persistent air quality issues in the Delhi-NCR region, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, chaired a high-level meeting today. This meeting focused on reviewing the action plans proposed by the state governments of Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, along with municipal bodies aimed at addressing the ongoing air pollution crisis. This was the fourth in a series of structured reviews directed by the Minister, highlighting a proactive approach to improving air quality.
During the meeting, Shri Yadav expressed deep concern over the continuous poor air quality in the region, announcing that beginning January 2026, monthly reviews at the ministerial level will monitor the progress of these action plans. He emphasized the need for state governments to unify their action plans across NCR cities for future presentations. The Minister assured that any bottlenecks in implementation would be tackled through regular high-level inter-state coordination meetings.
The Union Minister scrutinized presentations from various states and municipal bodies on actions taken to reduce air pollution, urging a sustained effort until visible improvements are seen. He stressed the importance of enforcing strict measures against violators while ensuring that the general public is not unduly inconvenienced. Specific issues identified during the meeting will be revisited in a follow-up review scheduled in 15 days.
Traffic Management and Public Transport Improvements
In response to growing traffic congestion, directives were issued for effective traffic management at 62 identified hotspots. The promotion of electric and CNG buses for corporate and industrial employees in Delhi-NCR was also prioritized. Staggered office hours and commercial activity were recommended to alleviate peak-hour traffic congestion. Moreover, there were strong instructions to enhance public transport connectivity along high-traffic routes and to intensify actions against illegal industrial units contributing to pollution.
Shri Yadav called for coordinated efforts with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to enhance last-mile connectivity in NCR cities. He ordered the removal of encroachments causing traffic disruptions within 10 days and mandated maintenance contracts to ensure pothole-free roads and effective drainage systems to mitigate monsoon damage.
Addressing Pollution at Source
The Minister highlighted the urgency of improving air quality within one week. He instructed authorities to swiftly deal with dust and construction waste on roads, strictly enforce construction bans during high pollution periods, and ensure mechanical road sweeping with GPS tracking for enhanced efficiency. Public accountability was also emphasized, with involvement from local representatives to strengthen governance.
Further guidelines directed the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to not allow demolition activities without nearby waste management facilities and imposed a seasonal ban on construction activities during the critical months of October to December. Efforts to engage start-ups in innovative waste management solutions were encouraged.
Regional Collaboration for Pollution Reduction
The state of Haryana was entrusted with revamping its Crop Residue Management machines and maximizing the use of paddy straw in power generation and biomass facilities. Additionally, illegal burning units and non-compliant polluting establishments in the region were to be sealed proactively. The Minister firmly commanded the installation of Online Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems in all polluting establishments, particularly in Haryana.
To enhance the sustainability of the ecosystem, Shri Yadav directed the exploration of tree plantation initiatives with a goal of planting 1.1 million saplings on World Environment Day 2026. Furthermore, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) received instructions to improve traffic flow at toll plazas through updated technology and maintenance of critical roadways.
