Government Extends Skill India Programme to Boost Employment

The Union Cabinet has officially approved the continuation of the Central Sector Scheme of the Skill India Programme (SIP) for FY 2022-23 to 2025-26. This revamped initiative comprises three pivotal components: the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0), the Pradhan Mantri National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (PM-NAPS), and the Jan Shikshan Sansthan (JSS). The objective is to provide skill training, reskilling, and upskilling across diverse demographics, with a particular focus on marginalized groups nationwide.

Training Achievements in 2024-25

During the fiscal year 2024-25, SIP successfully engaged a significant number of candidates, detailed below:

Scheme Candidates Trained/Oriented/Engaged
PMKVY 20,38,319
JSS 5,00,469
NAPS 9,85,041

This positive outcome reflects the government’s commitment. However, some shortfalls in training numbers against targets were noted, attributed to the phased implementation of the programme.

Support for Marginalized Groups

The SIP adopts a demand-driven approach, ensuring that skill training reaches all sections of society, particularly those in backward, tribal, and remote areas. Specific training numbers from marginalized groups in Maharashtra have been documented as follows:

Marginalized Group/Aspirational Districts PMKVY JSS NAPS
SC 17,637 25,194 1,05,717
ST 5,402 24,272 52,036
OBCs 46,455 53,012 2,55,199
Women 59,317 1,22,182 2,01,719
Aspirational Districts 6,837 20,089 2,775

Expanding Outreach Efforts

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is taking proactive steps to enhance SIP’s outreach. These include collaborations with various ministries for tailored skilling initiatives targeting marginalized communities. The Jan Shikshan Sansthan scheme specifically aims to empower women and vulnerable groups by providing accessible skill training.

Future Roadmap and Digital Initiatives

Furthermore, the government has introduced several measures under PMKVY 4.0, such as Aadhaar-based e-KYC verification, face authentication, and geo-tagged attendance to streamline the process, ensuring maximum transparency and efficiency.

Opportunities for job placements and apprenticeships are being facilitated through the Skill India Digital Hub, enabling trained candidates to connect with potential employers. The reported statistics illustrate a significant effort in upskilling the workforce, reaffirming the government’s dedication to enhancing employment opportunities across India.
