Government Encourages Refiners, Leading to 10% Boost in Cooking Gas Production
Cooking gas production in India has surged by 10% following government directives aimed at addressing supply shortages linked to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Officials reported on Tuesday that the increase in production is part of a broader effort to ensure adequate LPG supply, particularly for domestic consumers. In response to complaints about a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders from sectors like hospitality, the government has established a three-member committee to evaluate the situation and manage supply effectively.
Government Response to LPG Shortages
The Indian government has taken significant steps to manage the LPG supply amid rising concerns from various sectors, particularly hotels and restaurants. Acknowledging the complaints circulating on social media, officials have formed a committee comprising executive directors from three state-run oil companies. This committee will assess the current supply situation and address the issues surrounding commercial LPG cylinders. Despite the complaints, officials insist that there is sufficient LPG stock available, although they recognize some “supply management issues” affecting the distribution of commercial cylinders.
The government has prioritized domestic consumers over commercial ones, especially in light of the ongoing conflict. An official emphasized that in such situations, the needs of households must come first. They reported that approximately 60 lakh commercial and domestic cylinders are being distributed daily, maintaining the usual supply levels. While deliveries are generally made within a day, the current mandated delivery time has been extended to two-and-a-half days due to the crisis.
Prioritizing Domestic Consumers
India boasts over 33.3 crore domestic LPG consumers, and officials are committed to ensuring that cooking gas supply to households remains uninterrupted. The government recently invoked the Essential Commodities Act, directing state-run refiners to increase LPG production and focus additional output on the domestic sector. This decision has led to some confusion in various states, prompting the National Restaurant Association of India to express concerns to Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri regarding the disruptions in the availability of commercial cooking gas cylinders.
In a bid to clarify the situation, the three state-run oil marketing companies—IndianOil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum—have communicated their commitment to maintaining supplies for all domestic customers. They have also indicated that LPG will be supplied to essential non-domestic sectors, such as hospitals and schools, based on their requirements. The oil companies have made contact details for the committee members available on social media, encouraging those in need of commercial LPG to reach out for assistance.
Challenges in Non-Domestic LPG Supply
While the government is taking steps to address the LPG supply issues, challenges remain, particularly concerning non-domestic LPG supply. The oil companies have acknowledged that the availability of imported products significantly influences the supply of commercial LPG. As a result, the newly formed committee may not be able to resolve every grievance related to non-domestic LPG requests. Instead, they will evaluate requests based on their merits and the availability of products, making decisions accordingly.
Officials have reiterated that the focus remains on ensuring that domestic consumers receive the necessary cooking gas. The ongoing conflict in West Asia has created a complex situation that requires careful management of resources. The government’s approach aims to balance the needs of both domestic and commercial consumers while prioritizing the safety and well-being of households across the country.
