Government Deploys Extra Warships to Strait of Hormuz for Safe Passage of Indian Vessels
India is ramping up its naval presence in the Arabian Sea and Gulf of Oman amid rising tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian Navy has deployed over six warships, including logistics vessels, to ensure the safe passage of fuel and LPG carriers. These ships will remain east of the Strait of Hormuz and will not enter the sensitive waterway. Their primary mission is to escort Indian vessels to safer waters, ensuring that critical energy supplies can continue to flow. Sources indicate that this deployment is part of Operation Sankalp, which was initiated in 2019 to protect Indian maritime interests in the Gulf region.
The decision to bolster naval presence comes as India has successfully secured safe passage for two state-owned LPG tankers in recent days. Ongoing discussions with Tehran aim to facilitate the movement of additional vessels, highlighting India’s proactive approach to managing its energy supply chain amid geopolitical tensions.
Impact of Strait of Hormuz Closure
The Strait of Hormuz has faced significant disruptions since US-Israel airstrikes on Iran in late February, effectively closing the strait to many vessels. This closure has had a profound impact on global energy flows, with nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments passing through this narrow passage. India, which relies heavily on the region for energy imports, has been particularly affected, with approximately 90% of its LPG sourced from the Middle East.
Currently, 22 Indian-flagged vessels remain stranded in the Persian Gulf, carrying essential energy supplies such as LPG, LNG, and crude oil. The shipping ministry has reported that around 1.67 million tonnes of crude oil, 320,000 tonnes of LPG, and 200,000 tonnes of LNG are stuck on these vessels, which are awaiting transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Fortunately, all 611 seafarers aboard these ships are reported to be safe, and efforts are underway to secure their safe passage.
Global Energy Supply Challenges
The ongoing situation in the Strait of Hormuz has raised concerns about global energy supply disruptions. While India has managed to partially offset crude oil shortages through alternative sources such as Russia, West Africa, and the United States, the supply of LPG and natural gas has been significantly impacted. The Indian Navy has already facilitated the safe passage of two LPG tankers, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, which have successfully crossed the Strait of Hormuz and returned to India. Additionally, another Indian-flagged oil tanker, Jag Prakash, has set sail from east of the strait, carrying gasoline from Oman to Africa. These developments underscore India’s commitment to ensuring the security of its maritime interests and maintaining a steady flow of energy supplies in a volatile region.
