Government Boosts Deep-Sea Fishing in Andhra Pradesh
The Government of India is significantly advancing its efforts to enhance deep-sea fishing capabilities, particularly in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and High Seas. As part of the ‘Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana’ (PMMSY), traditional fishermen are receiving financial aid to acquire Deep Sea Fishing Vessels (DSFVs), with subsidies of up to 60% for women and SC/ST beneficiaries. This initiative has already sanctioned 50 DSFVs for Andhra Pradesh, of which six are currently operational, marking a critical step towards sustainable fisheries management in the region.
Major Funding Approved for Fisheries Development
In a notable move, the Department of Fisheries has approved proposals worth ₹2,416.92 crore from the Andhra Pradesh government. This funding includes a central share of ₹569.86 crore aimed at developing vital fisheries infrastructure like fishing harbours, landing centers, cold storage facilities, and value addition units. Three new fishing harbours will be constructed in Budagatlapalem, Pudimadaka, and Kothapatnam at a collective cost of ₹1,137.20 crore, showcasing the government’s commitment to modernizing the fishing industry.
Skill Development and Capacity Building Initiatives
To further enhance the skills and capabilities of fisheries stakeholders, the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) is implementing a comprehensive training programme focused on marine fishermen. In collaboration with the Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical & Engineering Training (CIFNET), these programmes have already trained a total of 8,040 fishermen, including 874 from Andhra Pradesh, equipping them with essential knowledge in deep-sea fishing techniques and onboard fish handling practices.
The Fishery Survey of India (FSI) is also active in promoting skill-development through practical training on deep-sea fishing technologies. This includes specialized programmes on tuna longlining and efficient handling of sashimi-grade tuna, covering critical skills such as navigation and safety practices at sea.
Strengthening India’s Seafood Export Potential
PMMSY emphasizes enhancing fish value addition and improving post-harvest infrastructure to bolster India’s seafood export capabilities. The government is closely engaging with stakeholders to adapt to global market dynamics and expand the country’s fisheries export footprint. Initiatives include facilitating trade agreements and improving domestic demand through reforms, as well as establishing strategic outreach efforts and consultations to elevate seafood exports.
Recent efforts also involved a Round Table Conference with representatives from 39 countries to promote Indian seafood exports. This diplomatic engagement aims to foster collaboration in sustainable fishing practices and technological advancements in aquaculture.
Continued Support and Future Initiatives
The Government is keen on negotiating new Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to increase market access for Indian seafood products while making regulatory adjustments to ease the business environment. Furthermore, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) remains active in promoting marine product exports through various international trade fairs and initiatives aimed at branding Indian seafood on the global stage.
