Government Accelerates Electric Vehicle Adoption with PM E-DRIVE Scheme

The Prime Minister’s Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme is making significant strides in promoting the use of Electric Vehicles (EVs) across India. By offering targeted demand incentives for a variety of EV segments, including e-two wheelers, e-three wheelers, e-ambulances, and e-trucks, the government is successfully lowering the initial costs associated with electric mobility. This initiative not only encourages consumers to make the switch to electric vehicles but also supports the manufacturers who produce them.

Significant Impact and Adoption Rates

To date, the PM E-DRIVE Scheme has facilitated the sale of over 22.12 lakh EVs, representing an impressive contribution to the sustainable transport sector. As of January 27, 2026, among these vehicles, 19.19 lakh are e-two wheelers, while 2.93 lakh are e-three wheelers. The scheme is designed to make electric vehicles more accessible to everyday consumers by providing upfront incentives that are reimbursed directly to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) by the Government of India, effectively reducing the purchase price for buyers.

Investment in Electric Buses

The scheme has also allocated a substantial budget of Rs.4,391 crore for the deployment of 14,028 electric buses in major cities with populations exceeding four million. Cities such as Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, and Surat are set to benefit from this initiative, with 13,800 e-buses planned for deployment in two phases. As of now, tenders for the first phase of 10,900 e-buses have been finalized, while the second phase’s tender process for 2,900 e-buses began on January 9, 2026.

Enhancing Charging Infrastructure

In addition to vehicles, the PM E-DRIVE Scheme is prioritizing the development of EV charging infrastructure across the country. With an allocation of Rs.2,000 crore, the government aims to establish a wide network of Public Charging Stations (EVPCS) to support the growing number of electric vehicles on the roads.

Financial Support for Manufacturers

As part of its efforts to boost the EV market, the scheme has reimbursed OEMs of e-two wheelers and e-three wheelers a total of Rs.1,703 crore by December 31, 2025. This financial support encourages manufacturers to produce more electric vehicles, thus fostering a healthier EV ecosystem in India.
