About Lancelot Ribeiro
Lancelot Ribeiroย (28 November 1933 โ 25 December 2010) was an Expressionist painter, best known for his experiments with polyvinyl acetate and oil paints, the forerunner of modern acrylic paints. According to theย Independent, he is considered to have been at “the vanguard of the influx of Indian artists to Britain.
Lancelot Ribeiro first came to England in 1950 to study accountancy. During this time, his creative talents began to shine. He studied life drawing at Saint Martinโs School of Art, tried jewelry design, and even wrote poetry. Later, he joined the Royal Air Force. In 1955, he returned to India on compassionate leave and started working in life insurance. Interestingly, his journey into painting was unplanned.
In 1961, Ribeiro had his first solo exhibition at the Bombay Artist Aid Centre. Amazingly, it sold out a month before it even opened, earning him fame and commissions. By 1962, when he settled in Britain, he had already held ten exhibitions. One of these even toured North America and Europe.
Ribeiroโs early paintings featured scenes of towns, people, and objects, often inspired by his Goan heritage. He mostly used oil paints at first. But soon, he experimented with polyvinyl acetate (PVA), a material he dyed to create vibrant paints. This innovation, a step toward modern acrylic paints, gave his art bold colors and faster drying times, completely changing his style.
In 1963, Ribeiro co-founded the Indian Artistsโ Collectives movement, which lasted for 25 years. He also gave lectures on Indian art and culture for the Commonwealth Institute, sharing his knowledge and inspiring others.
Throughout his career, Ribeiro participated in nearly 70 solo and group exhibitions in India, the UK, Paris, Germany, and the US. His groundbreaking techniques opened new paths for future artists and left a lasting impact on the art world.
