Today’s Google Doodle celebrates award-winning Irish-Nigerian-British musician and songwriter, Lizzie Emeh. She was a strong voice for people with learning disabilities in the UK. On October 9, 2009, Lizzie released her first album, Loud and Proud.

About Lizzie Emeh

Lizzie Emeh was born in Notting Hill, West London. As a baby, doctors told her parents that she would never walk or talk. But by the time she was four years old, Lizzie had already proven them wrong, and she continued to overcome challenges throughout her life. Her family inspired her love for music, and she knew from a young age that she wanted to make it her career.

In 1999, Lizzie was discovered at an open mic night. Soon after, she joined Heart n Soul, an arts organization that promotes inclusivity. Through this group, Lizzie performed across Europe and the world, including at the Glastonbury Festival and Heart n Soul Unplugged in Asia.

Lizzie wrote songs about her life experiences, as seen in Loud and Proud. The title reflects her belief in celebrating disabilities. She described the album as “eclectic, wide-ranging, and full of soul.” In 2012, she performed her original music at the London Paralympics opening ceremony.

Her next project was a three-part EP trilogy called See Me, which included The Clan, My Baboo, and Meds. These songs explored her relationships and mental health. Lizzie’s album Listen to Lizzie, a collection of songs about love and empowerment with a reggae twist, was released in 2023 after her passing.

Lizzie Emeh won many national awards for her work in music. Her songs, filled with heart, continue to inspire. She is also remembered for championing the rights of people with learning disabilities and encouraging others to pursue music.
