General Intuition Secures $134M Seed Funding to Enhance Agent Spatial Reasoning with Video Game Clips
Medal, a platform dedicated to sharing video game clips, has launched a new AI research lab named General Intuition. This innovative startup aims to leverage Medal’s extensive dataset of gaming videos to develop advanced AI agents capable of understanding spatial-temporal reasoning, which involves comprehending how objects and entities move through space and time. With a staggering collection of 2 billion videos annually from 10 million active users, General Intuition is poised to surpass existing platforms like Twitch and YouTube in training AI models.
Innovative Use of Gaming Data
General Intuition is built on the premise that the unique dataset provided by Medal offers unparalleled opportunities for training AI agents. Pim de Witte, CEO of both Medal and General Intuition, explained that gamers often upload clips showcasing extreme scenarios, whether positive or negative. This selection bias creates a rich dataset that is particularly useful for training AI. The startup’s approach has garnered significant attention, including a reported $500 million acquisition attempt by OpenAI last year, highlighting the value of the data they possess.
The startup has successfully raised $133.7 million in seed funding, led by Khosla Ventures and General Catalyst, with additional participation from Raine. This funding will be utilized to expand their team of researchers and engineers, focusing on developing a general agent capable of interacting with various environments. Initial applications are expected in gaming and search and rescue operations, where understanding complex environments is crucial.
Advancements in AI Capabilities
General Intuition has already made notable progress in its AI model’s capabilities. The model can comprehend environments it has not been specifically trained on and can accurately predict actions based solely on visual input. This means that the AI agents perceive the world similarly to human players, navigating through environments using controller inputs. The company believes this method can be effectively applied to physical systems, such as robotic arms and drones, which are often controlled by humans through video game interfaces.
The startup’s ambitious goals include creating new simulated worlds for training other AI agents and enabling these agents to autonomously navigate unfamiliar physical spaces. This technical approach differentiates General Intuition from competitors focused solely on building world models. While the company is also developing world models, it aims to avoid copyright issues by not positioning these models as products, unlike other companies in the field.
Focus on Gaming and Humanitarian Applications
General Intuition’s gaming applications are centered around developing advanced bots and non-player characters (NPCs) that can adapt to various levels of difficulty. Moritz Baier-Lentz, a founding member of the startup, emphasized the importance of creating bots that enhance player engagement by maintaining a balanced win rate. This approach aims to provide a more dynamic gaming experience, moving beyond traditional deterministic bots that yield the same results every time.
In addition to gaming, de Witte’s background in humanitarian work influences the startup’s focus on powering search and rescue drones. These drones often operate in environments where GPS is unavailable, necessitating advanced navigation capabilities. By applying spatial-temporal reasoning, General Intuition aims to enhance the effectiveness of these drones in critical situations.
The Path to Artificial General Intelligence
De Witte and Baier-Lentz view spatial-temporal reasoning as a vital component in the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI). While many AI labs concentrate on developing powerful language models, General Intuition believes that true AGI requires a deeper understanding of the physical world, which is often overlooked in text-based descriptions. De Witte noted that while language can convey information, it often lacks the nuanced understanding of spatial-temporal dynamics that is essential for comprehensive AI development.
