Fugitive Drug Kingpin Returned to India in Major NCB Operation
In a significant development in the battle against drug trafficking, Indian authorities have successfully repatriated Virender Singh Basoya, a notorious fugitive linked to a major narcotics syndicate. Basoya, who was apprehended at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport this morning, had been evading law enforcement since his arrest in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in June 2026, following an INTERPOL Red Notice issued at the behest of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
The successful return of Basoya was made possible through relentless efforts and coordination with UAE agencies, showcasing the NCB’s commitment to its anti-drug initiatives. Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised these efforts, noting that the Modi government is committed to pursuing drug traffickers worldwide and ensuring they face justice in India.
Background of the Case
The investigation into Basoya’s activities began in February 2024, when Pune City Police seized 500 grams of Mephedrone, a synthetic drug. The case rapidly expanded as law enforcement undertook widespread operations to dismantle the trafficking network associated with Basoya. This resulted in the recovery of approximately 1,837 kilograms of Mephedrone across Pune and Delhi.
As a key player in the syndicate, Basoya was identified as the overseas operative responsible for coordinating the trafficking of drugs from India to international markets. It was discovered that one of his significant operations involved a consignment of 970 kilograms of Mephedrone linked to export preparations via courier services.
In addition to his involvement with Mephedrone, Basoya is also tied to a separate case handled by the Delhi Police Special Cell, which targeted an international cocaine trafficking operation. In October 2024, this crackdown led to the seizure of over 1,300 kilograms of cocaine, Mephedrone, and other illegal substances from various locations in and around Delhi, as well as Gujarat.
Operation GLOBAL-HUNT
Basoya’s extradition is part of a broader strategy known as Operation GLOBAL-HUNT, which focuses on locating major drug traffickers operating internationally. This initiative fosters collaboration between Indian law enforcement and international partners, utilizing mechanisms like INTERPOL notices to bring fugitives back to India.
The NCB’s ongoing efforts under Operation GLOBAL-HUNT have yielded previous successes, including the extradition of other wanted traffickers. The government has committed to a zero-tolerance policy toward drug trafficking, emphasizing the importance of returning fugitives to face justice for their crimes.
