Fit India Sundays on Cycle Celebrates National Sports Day with Enthusiasm

In a vibrant celebration of fitness and cycling, Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, along with prominent figures such as Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir, wrestler Sangram Singh, and actor Madhurima Tuli, led a special edition of Fit India Sundays on Cycle at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium today. This event, held in partnership with BRICS, saw participation from over 25,000 locations across India, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s cycling movement.

Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the unique significance of this 88th edition, noting that it coincides with India’s hosting of the 18th BRICS Summit on September 12-13. “This week’s edition is dedicated to our esteemed guests from BRICS, and we are thrilled to welcome them today,” he stated. He also outlined the three-fold benefits of cycling: enhancing fitness, reducing pollution, and alleviating traffic congestion, encouraging citizens to incorporate cycling into their weekly routines.

Growing Passion for Cycling

“The enthusiasm for cycling is on the rise nationwide, and ‘Sundays on Cycle’ is transforming into a passion for many. Let’s spend at least an hour each Sunday away from screens to enjoy outdoor activities, including cycling and sports,” Dr. Mandaviya urged.

The event witnessed participation from distinguished representatives of BRICS nations, including diplomats from Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Belarus, Cuba, Ethiopia, and Russia. Senior officials from various governmental departments were also present, amplifying the event’s importance.

Endorsements from Sports Icons

Flagging off the cycling ride, Padma Shree Gautam Gambhir described the initiative as exceptional, stating, “A fitter India means a stronger and more self-reliant country. This is more than just an event; it’s a movement. We must all strive to turn this into something bigger, ensuring that our youth lead healthier lives.”

With over 5,000 enthusiastic participants, including youth and senior citizens, the atmosphere was electric at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium as they engaged in cycling and dance activities under the BRICS Run & Ride 2026 initiative. The event was enhanced by a lively performance from an ITBP brass band, contributing to the festive spirit.

Promoting Fitness Nationwide

This special edition took place a day after National Sports Day, reinforcing the government’s commitment to promoting fitness and healthy participation among citizens. Fit India Sundays on Cycle, initiated by Dr. Mandaviya, is organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India, Raahgiri Foundation, and MY Bharat, and it spans across all states and union territories through the SAI and Khelo India network.

The cycling drive was conducted simultaneously across the nation, including at SAI Regional Centres and National Centres of Excellence, emphasizing a unified approach to health and fitness.
