Festive Hiring Boom: Job Growth in Consumption Sectors and Surge in Gig Roles and Female Participation

Hiring in key sectors across India has surged by 17% year-on-year from August to October, driven by robust consumer sentiment and festive spending, according to a report by Adecco India. The festive quarter saw a remarkable 25% increase in gig and temporary jobs compared to the same period last year. This growth reflects a significant rise in short-term hiring across various industries, including retail, e-commerce, banking, financial services, insurance (BFSI), logistics, and hospitality, particularly during the Dussehra celebrations.

Growth in Gig and Temporary Employment

Adecco’s analysis indicates a substantial uptick in gig and temporary employment, with a 25% increase over the previous year. The company had initially projected around 216,000 gig and temporary roles for 2025, but the first three months of the festive season have already shown a 37% growth in temporary staffing and a 15-20% rise in gig worker deployments. Deepesh Gupta, director and head of general staffing at Adecco India, noted that this year’s festive hiring reflects both economic confidence and the evolving nature of the gig economy. He emphasized that hiring volumes and compensation have surpassed levels seen in the past three years, marking 2025 as a pivotal year in the post-COVID recovery phase.

Sector-Specific Hiring Trends

The report highlights that retail and e-commerce sectors experienced a significant hiring surge of 28%, fueled by the expansion of quick commerce and omni-channel strategies. The logistics sector, particularly last-mile delivery services, recorded the highest growth at 35-40%. Additionally, the BFSI sector saw a 30% increase in demand for field sales and point-of-sale roles, especially in smaller towns. The hospitality and travel industries also rebounded with a 25% increase, driven by festive travel and wedding season bookings. This diverse growth across sectors underscores the dynamic nature of the job market during this festive period.

Regional Insights and Future Projections

While major metropolitan areas like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai accounted for nearly 80% of total job deployments, tier II and III cities demonstrated even faster growth, with staffing demand rising by 21-25%. Cities such as Lucknow, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Bhubaneswar, Nagpur, and Mysuru are leading this trend, while emerging markets like Kanpur, Kochi, Vijayawada, and Varanasi are becoming key hubs for short-term employment. Looking ahead, Adecco anticipates that hiring momentum will persist through the upcoming wedding season and into early 2026, with overall hiring volumes expected to grow by 18-20% year-on-year during this extended period.

Compensation Trends and Gender Participation

The report also reveals that salaries for entry-level positions have increased by 12-15%, while experienced roles have seen a rise of 18-22%. Notably, female participation in gig and temporary employment has surged by 30-35%, particularly in sectors like retail, logistics, customer support, and financial services. This increase in female workforce participation highlights the evolving landscape of employment in India, as more women engage in various sectors during this festive hiring season.
