February 2026 Sees Positive Trends in Labour Force Participation and Employment
Latest data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) reveals encouraging trends in the Indian job market for February 2026. The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) remained stable at 55.9%, reflecting continuity from January, while notable improvements were observed in both female participation and employment rates.
Female Participation on the Rise
The female LFPR for those aged 15 and above slightly increased from 35.1% in January to 35.3% in February. This progress is particularly noteworthy in rural areas, where the female participation rate rose from 39.7% to 40.0%. However, the urban female LFPR remained steady at 25.5%. These figures underscore a gradual yet significant shift in women engaging more actively in the workforce.
Stable Worker Population Ratio
The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) also showed resilience, with an overall rate of 53.2% in February, barely changing from 53.1% in January. Rural areas experienced a WPR of 56.3%, while urban areas saw a slight uptick to 47.0% from 46.8%. Additionally, female WPR recorded an increase to 33.4%, up from 33.1%, indicating improvements across both urban and rural sectors.
Declining Unemployment Rates
February 2026 marked a significant drop in urban unemployment rates, which fell to 6.6%, down from 7.0% in January. This decline shows a recovery trend in the urban job market, signaling more job opportunities becoming available. Conversely, the rural unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.2%. Overall, the national unemployment rate decreased slightly to 4.9% from 5.0% in January.
Improved Female Unemployment Figures
The report also highlighted positive changes in female unemployment rates. The overall rate for women aged 15 and above dropped to 5.1% from 5.6% in January. Both urban and rural sectors saw declines, with urban female unemployment decreasing from 9.8% to 8.7% and rural female unemployment falling from 4.3% to 4.0%. In contrast, male unemployment remained stable at 4.8%.
Data for the February 2026 bulletin was collected from a total of 374,879 individuals across urban and rural areas, emphasizing the comprehensive nature of the survey.
